It will compile previously released content from Volo's Guide and Tome of Foes, and essentially replace them for D&D 5E. It's a rewrite and re-release of mostly the same content people already own; but more woke this time around. It's going to be billed as the "best" companion to the 5E Monster Manual.
Will they nerf Mordenkainen like they did in Ravenloft 5E?

I don't know, but I believe this coming book will bookend the changes we saw in Tasha's.
There's already leaks for it that include basically removing mechanical penalties of any kind (including speed for short races) and, of course, the "everyone gets any ability bonus they want because fuck fantasy races being fantastical or having evolved to be different things"
We aren't going to have to wait for the next version or edition of D&D, to see them undo the traditional lore and uniqueness of D&D and its components. That is already happening before our eyes. Tasha's showed their intent. It's been a while since then, and now they have picked up the pace.

That's okay. My wallet will remain closed.

Mordenkainen will become non-binary and have a trans partner with blue hair and you best respect xe/xer pronouns or get Canceled out of existence by a strongly worded tweet.

It may have started at Elminster but they won't stop there.
Garbage. Elminster spent some time polymorphed into a female (to teach him humility) but he's always been male (and a bit of a horndog, lol).
He's always been secure in who he is, so disguising himself -- as male OR female -- never bothers him. He even jokes about it in one of Volo's books (something about 'how do women wear these tight bodices anyways?').
In any case, I was grumbling less about Mordy being slapped with whatever rainbow flavor of the week makes the NPCs happy, and more about how he got pwned in Ravenloft by Strahd -- which I find entirely unbelievable. Sorry, no.

So a retelling of that weird Rary module from TSR? LEast I think it was Rary who ended up stuck in a womans body and brainwashed into being evil by a demon or somesuch.

Oh, thenikely yes, they already have the forward and it basically talks about Mordenkainen not wanting to write a forward for a game book and having Tasha sub in instewd....i think someone at WOTC has a crush in her since she's basically in every book now and her being about as evil as it gets is glossed over.

As an old-school Ravenloft fan, I found it annoying because dropping Mordenkainen into Ravenloft was one of several changes that made CoS feel more like a nostalgia trip for Hickman's time at TSR than for the actual setting. :)

Yeah. She's the mother of Iuz, the Oerth god of tyranny for crying out loud. Iggwilv is not a nice person.
So bizarre.

It does seem silly. Why not write up a new NPC to fill the role, rather than make Mordenkainen the jobber?

That requires effort and talent, it's easier to warp an existing character to their purposes. See Comic book industry.

Also, they couldn't use Elminster because the Forgotten Realms are still a going concern, and using Raistlin would have driven Weis ballistic. If you thought the reaction to Soth in Ravenloft was bad ... :)
They should release Greyhawk as a grittier wierder alternative to Seattle/Forgotten Realms.
They won't, but as they nerf one setting to appease the unappeasable they should try to provide something for majority of folks.
