This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What’s your favorite non-D&D/OGL fantasy game?

'Tis a pretty straight forward question; what elf games do you like that don't use the D&D mechanics (and that includes generic/universal systems, so yes, Tenbones, Savage Worlds counts)

My groups have had fun with The One Ring, Runequest/Stormbringer hacks, and Rolemaster. Artesia too, come to think of it.

Dragonlance 5th Age - the SAGA system is quite different from D&D, while still feeling familiar in a number of ways.

WEG Star Wars is my favorite rpg. Pretty much proves that a system designed properly can help promote a certain style of play appropriate for the game world.
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

I really loved Warhammer Fantasy.  Not sure if it was the first or second edition but I ran it for a large group and enjoyed it.

For a different flavor of Fantasy BESM, if Anime Fantasy is your thing.
Fantasy Hero, although it also suffers from the same malady of the system, lengthy character creation.

Here is why this forum tends to be so stupid. Many people here think Joe Biden is "The Left", when he is actually Far Right and every US republican is just an idiot.

For a more grounded fantasy, Runequest and Dragon Quest.  I like the subject matter of DQ better, but RQ is a much cleaner system (no matter which version you use). I don't mind GURPS, either, though it's not usually my first choice.

For a more superhero type of fantasy, Fantasy Hero.

I'd run Burning Wheel again with the right group and some of the alternate magic systems, but it works better with fewer players than I normally have at the table.  Ditto Torchbearer.

Though my favorite right at the moment is my own system.  ;D

Dragon Warriors, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (1E or 2E), Chaosium's flavor of Stormbringer, Cthulhu Dark Ages, V:tM Dark Ages.

Edit: almost forgot Rolemaster (Arms Law / Claw Law / Spell Law)

Chaosium 2nd ed Classic Runequest / pre-4e Stormbringer / Age of Shadow monograph / BRP Classic Fantasy monograph; 1e Warhammer Fantasy.

You can see that beyond the D&D biome I like the RQ/BRP engine.

I ran a ton of RQ 3 back in the day. It changed how I view gaming. I also like HarnMaster for more down to earth fantasy.
Running: HarnMaster and Baptism of Fire

Wasteland Sniper

I'm very fond of Dragonbane. I ran it once at a con and really enjoyed how the system works. The book art is also beautiful, which certainly helps.

D6 is my favorite system to play or run.

My favorite dedicated fantasy game is Barbarians of Lemuria. Or rather Legends of Steel BOL edition. That or Dungeonslayers.

Hackmaster

Rolemaster 1e/2e

Combat was deadly, crit tables were a ton of fun and I loved the roll-high percentile system.
