This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What's your favorite boxed set?

Ringworld!

Oh god, it was Teh Pretty... but also Teh Expensive. 118 German marks, which was like $60. In 1985. We would secretly fondle it in the store... it was too big to steal, you see...

ahh the boxed set...holder of books, miscellanea and geegaws!  Wish i still had all my old stuff... :(

Honestly, since i started gaming in the mid-70's, ALL my first games were boxed sets.  I wish more publishers would release special edition boxed sets these days (Phil Reed and the Trolllords kick ass!)

It's a tossup between Marvel Advanced, Return to the Tomb of Horrors, and Dragon Mountain.

The D&D Immortals boxed set gets an honorable mention.

yup it sure did.
spicey stories were a whole sub-genre of Pulp fiction. harmless by todays standards -divorcees, fallen women, native girls, young co-eds. and always some sort of peril. murder, white slavery, abduction, a little mild bondage and torture thrown in. Remember these pulps were marketed to working class guys during the great depression- what better escape than to read about exotic south seas islands where the native girls run around topless, waiting for the brave American adventurer to save them from a man-eating tiger.

The Uncanny X-Men Campaign Set!

This one:

There's a good chance you can define a person by what era of X-Men they cut their teeth on.  Mine was the late 80's early 90's -- just before everything got "Imaged".  This was just before the X-tinction Agenda crossover took place, Chris Claremont was going to comeback and some neat things were happening in Marvel mutant-verse.  I loved these comics and this box set, right here, almost perfectly encapsulated the feel of the X-Men comics at that particular time.

There was another mutant/X-Men box released not too long after this one, but it was rushed and didn't provide the amount of detail that the one above had.  I should have realized it when I saw it had Cable and Bishop on the cover...usually a bad sign.
