This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What's your favorite boxed set?

These three ..in rotating order, depending on the year and when you ask me :

1) TRAVELLER classic set of books in that little black cardboard box

2) GURPS original in a cardboard box - introduced me to my favorite basic rules mechanic.

3)  TARSUS Boxed adventure/planet maps set for classic TRAVELLER I only got this one in the spring of 2004. My players rolled for what star system they start out at in District 268. Dice results gave us "Tarsus" . So I made up some stuff based on the stats. Only remembered vaguesaly that there was a boxed thing connected with that planet.  Then I go to ORIGINS 2004 - and I lucked out!!  At a used games booth I found a whole bunch of classic TRAVELLER stuff  that had never been opened!! (still shrink wrapped!!!!)

So yeah - I splurged and got about $40.00 worth of stuff that I'm still using with my G:T campaign.

Tyberious Funk

DC Heroes 2nd edition.

I'm just trying to remember what it included - character creation book, rule book, hero roster (basically background and stats for all major DC characters) plus a short module I think.  AV/EV "wheel" to help with action resolution.  Plus a stack of character cards - all the major DC heroes with a colour illustration and stats on the back.  I'm not sure what purpose the cards were supposed to serve but they were puuurty.

Death on The Reik , well it was a boxed set :D A damn fine epic adventure with enough twist and turns, oozing with atmosphere, eccentric characters and just enough bad puns for a memorable campaign. Evocative writing and very moody artwork makes this set a classic.

Star Frontiers: Night Hawks boxed set was damn cool. Those cardboard counters were really cool to use in play. The whole set was a freakin' cool expansion to Star Frontiers.

Caudex

Dark Continent - excellent use of atmospheric players books and handouts, including maps of Africa that are mostly blank.

Gawrsh, I like a lot of boxed sets. Boot Hill, Top Secret, Holmes D&D, Gamma World (1st ed is my fave), Hollow World, Planescape...

For newer ones, I think the C&C collectible box set is cool. The Wilderlands box set is very cool. And the Egyptian setting box set Hamunaptra from Green Ronin is very nice as well.

Probably, though, my favorite is Planescape. It's so gorgeous.

Ravenloft (The first run, with Strad holding some chick on the cover) My favourite campaign world to run. Maps, Stock cards of darklord dwellings, a background and setting book. Lots of interesting things, with no metaplot insight.

I ran a few "The Mists get you, now find your way home" games before starting a full fledged campaign with the characters being natives of Darkon. Ran that game for years...... ah, good times.

And I picked up the harback they put out, and the second boxed set, cause I'm a freaking game junkie when it comes to a setting I realy enjoy.

I'd say Undermountain was a good boxed set. True, mega dungeons aren't campaign settings, but they're fun for a few sessions anyway. It's like a realy big bag of corn chips. You'll eat till your sick of it, put it away, and then come back latter to find out there's plenty left for later.
Abyssal Maw:

I mean jesus. It's a DUNGEON. You're supposed to walk in there like you own the place, busting down doors and pushing over sarcophagi lids and stuff. If anyone dares step up, you set off fireballs.

1. Traveller, Deluxe.
2. BattleTech & CityTech

--lots of nothing--

3. Hollow World
4. Wilderlands of High Adventure
5. Kingdom of Adventure

Personal Holy Grail:
Invasion:Earth
I get a MilSciFi novel series worth of ideas by just opening the box.

I sold my Planescape Box. It did only speak to me in a condescending manner, and therefore I didnĀ“t liked it. The Planescape hype is all about emo stuff. I liked the Artwork, but it never said: "Adventure!" to me.

I only own two boxed sets - or rather, I own a bunch of stuff that originally came out in boxed sets, but only in book form (like the D&D Rules Cyclopedia, or the Classic Traveller reprints).

On the other hand, they are frickin' awesome boxes: the original Planescape box and the Runequest 2nd Edition box.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

Hmm...well, the boxed set I got the most use out of would be the RQ3 deluxe edition (which I got for half-price in 1983). I do like the Pendragon 1st ed. box, for the same reason as Pierce. And Traveller was definitely a classic. But my favourite would probably be the first edition of Trollpak.

I think my favorite would be a tie between the Tom Moldvay Basic set and Marvel Super Heroes Advanced.  I certainly got a lot of mileage out of both.

Consonant Dude

My favorite boxed set is Everway. It's got plenty of goodness. Three books/booklets, cards, beautiful character sheets and nice placeholders. And it's my favorite roleplaying game.

Others I like(d):

Basic D&D/w Keep on Borderlands/Cavern of chaos: this was a French version in an orange box. Years of fun!

Greyhawk: I'm keeping it for nostalgia.

Undermountain: crawling goodness!

Star Frontiers: Everything we didn't feel we could do in D&D, we did with that game.

Justice Inc.: A really, really great set.

Thieves' World: Cool and mysterious! I loved this one!

There are so many boxed sets that I love, and many of them have been mentioned here.   But I'll go ahead and say that my all-time favorite, entirely based on the wealth of stuff that was in there, and the amount of enjoyment I got from it, was:

Yoink, can't believe I forgot Star Frontiers, Everway, Runequest and Thieves World! All great boxes (especially Star Frontiers).
