This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What would you do with a Fragment?

Quote from: flyingmice;857335Th...but putting the mausoleum of a revered prophet there would generate pilgrimage. Pilgrims spend money.
Then you want fragments floating around the pilgrimage site to provide services to pilgrims: inn rooms, restaurants serving "authentic" last meals of the prophet, clothing - including authentic robes of the prophet to take back home as well as purity robes that you wear instead of your mundane clothes for the ritual cleansing, vendors to sell food to hungry pilgrims, holy relics "guaranteed to work", and souvenirs - lots of souvenirs.

Yep! Exactly! Just like Santiago de Compostela or Becket's Canterbury or the Kaaba in Mecca.

Perhaps you could sink a fragment down to sea level to make an island - why, I don't know; perhaps for fishing (or to take on ballast, assuming you could lower it without first having that).

Fragments at varying heights so you having stepping stones to get to the moon.

Small fragment with sails and a rope attached; its movement around turns something on the ground (or on a lower fragment), say some sort of water pumping or other machinery, tech level permitting.

That's already written up, BSJ - suggested earlier in the thread. :D
And you take in ballast to sink, get rid of it to rise... :P

That would be a freaking awesome idea for another game! This one is more "everything not specifically stated is like here on earth."

Thank you all! I am getting Fragments of Air and Stone ready for publication now. Every single answer here made me think, and most gave me some solid inspiration! You guys rock! I'm so sorry I don't write the kind of games you all like! Have fun!

That's OK, Bren! I don't even try. If I'm happy with it, that's enough. :D

David Johansen

So it occurs to me we might be able to get a few of them spinning fast and play battle tops with them.  This would create a pretty dangerous region of loose debris and fast spinning fragments bouncing off of each other.

5 Stone Games

Quote from: flyingmice;856999OK, so I'm writing a supplement for Volant, called Fragments of Air and Stone. The supplement is about fragments - chunks of floating rock and vegetation too small to be a real country, up to about two thirds the size of Rhode Island - including managing and improving them.

Suppose your company - and it can be any kind of company you want - acquired one in whatever fashion. What would you want to do with it assuming a late medieval technology plus giant riding birds and flying ships?

A family estate designed to be self sustaining seems the best approach.

I figure it could support one noble/rich corporate family (mine) and enough serfs/employees to do well for itself.

Assuming about half the size of Little Rhody , this would allow at early 18th century tech or late medieval with magic a population of around 25k

I don't like crowds so a population of around 10k seems reasonable.

Its not quite Athens but its a decent self sustaining city state with enough woods and such to be pleasant

If  possible I'd use my  birds and ships to capture other stones and move them into place and eventually I'd hope for a group of these Fragments linked by bridges or the like  to form a larger city state, maybe on the Athenian model

Tetsubo

Quote from: jadrax;857005Do they move? Can I crash one into my enemies? Can I hollow it out and call it the Death Fragment?

Completely off topic but is that an ICQ symbol under your avatar?

It is but I haven't used it for years now. Probably should get rid of it.

This is the bullseye I was aiming at from the beginning, 5 Stone Games! Have you actually read Volant? :D
