I don't fully agree. Only because like 99% of the RPG's I own and run, I make them my own.

My Vampire is a syncretic version of every edition, with bits and pieces I like/don't like. My own twists to things. And booze. Mix and play on.

Its hard to say since you are strongly advocating the "trenchcoat/katana/dark superhero" interpretation in this thread, so I'd be tempted to say whatever edition supported that the least would be my preference.

Why do people act like "Trenchcoats and Katanas" in WoD is a bad thing? It's awesome and fun!

If anything is a bad thing, it would be "Personal Horror". Whining and wangsting like a bunch of mopey crybaby Goths, honestly I do not see the fun in that at all.

But that's just me. I mean, if a petulant edgelord like Martin Ericsson can make it in the gaming industry, then I don't know what to believe anymore.

Or maybe I just grew up. I've actually resisted going back to revisit VtM in recent years for the same reason I refuse to re-read Dragonlance: Legends. I have really good memories of it, and I'm pretty sure the reality is not going to stand up to my experience as a 10-12 year old.

Honestly? If I wanted to do "Trenchoats & Katana" I'd use a supers-system. It would probably be hilariously good action-packed fun.

Well as I stated earlier - I guess it depends who you play with and why. Precisely ZERO of my WoD players identified with being "whining wangsty mopey crybabies" about anything. And certainly not in regards to the idea of personal horror. Perhaps it's because we all came from fairly gritty backgrounds in real life. Personal horror is horror. Now I recognize that bit is lost on a whole lot of people. But did you consider the fact that you perceive personal-horror in this context means that you've allowed those very people that you're probably right in disregarding, to color your view of the possibilities of what personal-horror might actually be in regards to gaming? It's a waste of some huge opportunities. (or not if you don't give a shit. I dunno some people have no stomach for horror)

It has nothing to do with Goths, or any other specific sub-culture. So it's funny to me that you zero in on this as representative of something it's not, ironically the very thing you're saying you apparently don't like. Hell go check out what's really horrific in the world and play your game in relation to that.

One thing I started doing fairly early on was randomizing Vampire supernatural powers and weaknesses for each campaign. In some, vampires couldn't cross running water.  In others, holy water worked regardless of the Faith of the wielder.  It kept the players from getting blase about their state as undead.

D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

Well, RIFTs does have vampire nations, and Champions is roughly within the same system wheelhouse... If you're in it for the pyrotechnics and not the genre, it might be the better choice?

I certainly wouldn't want to push Storyteller system repeatedly through the whiz-bang combat paces that would entail an equivalently awesome Supers session. I'd be liable to chuck the system out the nearest window if I had to process that over and over again. Very loose system, like a beanbag, doesn't do robust combat details so well... very handwavium after a while, like a goth pretending to be a willow in the wind.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

I have considered porting Vampire: The Masquerade's 1e fluff over to Big Eyes Small Mouth 1st Edition. So that way it would be compatible with the Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book, which is a bonus.

Isn't that basically what Aberrant and to some extent Scion were, though?  I know Scion had some breath-takingly bad system issues, but I never saw Aberrant in the the wild.

There's a sourcebook titles Cold Hands, Dark Heart that is about modern urban horror in BESM.  It's more horror anime than WoD horror but a lot of the stuff would be usable.  I got it intending to run a game like that but it never got off the ground.
