As the topic says: what RPG do you think you'll be playing a year from now? Will it still be 3e, 4e, or OD&D? Is there a game you'd LIKE to play a year from now? Anything you plan to switch to? What's your prediction on what you'll be playing in one year?
As time goes by I'm slowly drifting back to True20 for most stuff. I like 4e, and I like Savage Worlds, but True20 is really easy to tweak, and I know it really well. However, I keep telling myself I'm going to finally bite the bullet and learn M&M2e. I'll probably just use V&V again, though.
I'm hoping our B/X D&D game will still be going strong at this time next year. :)
I expect I'll have played a 4e game by that point. I predict that will be a beer+pretzels kind of thing and won't turn into a long-term campaign. I'd LIKE to be surprised by WotC releasing a Superhero game based on 4e - which I will also be playing. :)

I totally missed it. Wonder how the GSL will impact that, or are they working around it?
Who knows what we'll be playing a year from now! Well, I expect I'll keep running Usagi Yojimbo, it's a game I really like. I'd like to give a chance to A Song of Ice and Fire, but I've got yet to read it thoroughly before I feel confident enough to run it. As a player, I expect we'll continue our Capitán Alatriste game (it always delivers), and from our conversations, there's a chance we might play Fading Suns and Kult, but it's not a sure thing, we'll see.
No, we won't be playing nor D&D3, nor OD&D. None of us owns D&D3, and I don't think that will change anytime soon. One of us started recently a Rules Cyclopedia game (does that count as OD&D?), but another member of our group didn't like it, so I don't think we'll play it any longer. This friend who didn't like the RC has D&D4 and he likes it, but he likes Capitán Alatriste more, so no D&D for us. Why so much talk about D&D if we don't expect to play it? Because you asked! :D
Wow good question Zack. I'm gonna say Spycraft 2.0, or Savage Worlds. That means a year from now I'll be played something else entirely and will look back think "Wow really?".
Hopefully I will still be running the Torg R&E game I am going to start, but who knows if that will still be happening in a year. I hope it will
I've just started a Swords & Wizardry/OD&D campaign. With any luck, it will still be running next year.
I'll likely be playing several games in a year.
3.5, 4e, and Mutants and Masterminds will be in the mix.
There is also the 4e Amethyst setting coming out under the GSL that I want to take a look at.
Castles & Crusades, AD&D/OSRIC. Call of Cthulhu.
Hopefully Little Fears: Nightmare Edition if Jason can get it all together by then. If not I'm sure I'll be doing a fantasy game of some setting using Red Box D&D or running an all new Kult campaign.
Quote from: Ronin;289807Wow good question Zack. I'm gonna say Spycraft 2.0, or Savage Worlds. That means a year from now I'll be played something else entirely and will look back think "Wow really?".
I think if any of us remember it will be fun to go back and see what our answers were (and how accurate they turned out)!
I will be running a 17th century swashbuckling game using either Flashing Blades or Savage Worlds, and I'll be a year or two away from introducing my children to Traveller.
I will have run a Boot Hill one-shot and played in an OD&D or 1e AD&D game at a Dragonsfoot 'mini-con' as well.
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.
I will be playing Houses of the Blooded: Wilderness game, Houses of the Blooded: Slumming game, Call of Cthulhu, Sorcerer and Amber.
And if all goes well, I'll be running a game of my own design...
Hard to say.
I'll probably still be playing Mongoose Traveller (as we just got into it) and Spycraft 2.0 (because it's a mainstay, 2 books are coming out this summer for it, as well as FantasyCraft and the World on Fire flags.)
I may or may not resume 3.5 or some other D20 variant by then. Right now, I am totally burned out on D&D, but these things go in waves for me.
Spirit of the Century is sort of up in the air with me. I really like some of its conventions, but all by itself, it's seeming I little bare to me. I don't agree with many of the FATE-faithful that the aspect/FATE point system serves well as a one-size-fits-all replacement for more robust simulation. I'll probably end up playing some other variant of it (Starblazers with my own setting, maybe), house rule it, or take the stuff I like and find another game to apply it to.
Hopefully i'll be playing Tenra Basho Zero if it manages to finally get printed after all these years, other than that probably traveller or some kinda savage worlds setting(possibly the new one from adamant since ive grown bored of m&m's rules of late and savage superheroes may just work.)
Though saying that i could be playing a/state if the rulebooks prove as interesting as the lite rules ive downloaded from the site.
Mongoose Traveller, OSRIC, Pathfinder, Labyrinth Lord, 3.x....
Just off the top of my head.
Dark Heresy. I love the system, I love the setting, and at this point I'm happy to just not bother learning anything else. I think I'd like to be a one-system guy for a while, and I'm too burnt out on D&D for that.
I will be finished with my homebrew and be running it next year.
Quote from: The Shaman;289910I will be running a 17th century swashbuckling game using either Flashing Blades or Savage Worlds
Dude if your in michigan I totally would like to play some Flashing Blades. (I'm pretty sure my buddy would be down as well.)
Well, if I have my way, at this time next year I'll be doing the following:
1. My legion campaign will still be going (using Star Wars D20 for the bulk of the system), starting its 4th year of game, with one more year to go.
2. We'll be on year 550 or so of the Great Pendragon Campaign, with a bit under a year to go there too.
3. My Amber campaign will probably be on its last year.
4. Hopefully, my RIFTS game will still be alive.
5. With any luck, I'll be running Starblazer Adventures; though in all likelihood I'll probably still be waiting for them to actually release the damn game, which they'll be claiming will happen sometime that month.

What system is Starblazer Adventure supposed to use? Cause from the little cube7 blurp it sounds like it would be the ticket to run a Dan Dare adventure.
Oh yeah, and of course, the soon to be notorious 'Nerd and Naughty Librarian'. :D

Well, if you (and your buddy) ever find yourselves in Long Beach, California, look me up. :)
I'm putting together materials for an Obsidian Portal campaign wiki - I'll let you know when it goes up, if you're interested. It's fun building a campaign where the list of NPCs includes figures such as King Louis XIII, the Prince de Condé, Queen Marie de' Medici, Duke Carlo Emmanuele of Savoy, the Patriarch of Antioch and the Grand Master of the Knights of the Order of St. John.
Yes, I would be interested to take a look.
How the heck would I know? There's a good chance it hasn't been written yet, Zach!

D&D 4e - because the monthly meetup group has cool gamers and its always been lots of fun. Also, I might start running some competitive delve stuff at conventions again. Plus, I have to finish the Shattered Isles setting and get that primed for 2010 publishing.
Goreblade - because it will hopefully be published by next year so I will be wanting to demo at conventions.
Rune Tank - because it will be published by the end of 2009 so it will also need to be demo'd at cons. Unless my brain shatters under the bizarro nature of spell casting tanks going on adventures.
Something Palladium - I really enjoy a bunch of their settings so I will be running something PB a few times next year for sure.
A combination of True20, Savage Worlds, Mongoose Traveller, and some scattered Call of Cthulhu one shots.
I'm officially abandoning D&D in all of its incarnations (with the possible exception of something like Labyrinth Lord).
There's also a possibility for Mutants & Masterminds 2e to slip in there somewhere.
QuoteWhat system is Starblazer Adventure supposed to use? Cause from the little cube7 blurp it sounds like it would be the ticket to run a Dan Dare adventure.
It uses FATE.
Either D&D 4e or Shadowrun 4e.
When is Rogue Trader due out? If it's by next year then probably that and my Dark Heresy stuff. Cuple that with my adoration of the WFRP 2e boos I own and I can see lots of WFRP/W40K stuff going on.
I totally dig Savage Worlds, so that. I can do almost anything with that little $10 book (even use it for the system to go with the setting info in my WFRP/40K books if I so desired). I can't see myself quitting any time soon.
nWoD. Love it.
I haven't purchased a whole new system since I got my SW:EE book. I don't need myself needing anything beyond the games I have. I have my gritty game system, I have my universal game system (I own Necessary Evil, Runepunk, Shaintar, Solomon Kane, and Necropolis 2350 for it; that covers a LOT of ground), and I have my gritty horror system.
-=Grim=-
For me, probably the same games I've been running or playing for the past 20-odd years (old TSR primarily) and Traveller (which I've only been running for the past 2 years). Something new might work its way in there, too; it usually does.

This sounds interesting. Do you have a link or any more explaination?
The system I'll be playing will be EABA, since we've pretty much adopted that as our go-to system for whatever we play.
As for setting - I'm not sure :-)
The solo game for my wife set in a dark future setting will probably be wrapping up in about a year - no idea what we'll play after that.
My regular group is currently on hold while one player deals with a major illness - not sure if we'll play again, as there were issues in the group just before we had to stop that need to be sorted out.

What I'd LIKE to play in a year from now ?
I'd LOVE to be a player in a
GURPS game or a
SAVAGE WORLDS session or two. Playing a character in a
TRAVELLER game would be fun again - just
being a player.
....HOWEVER, I'll probably wind up being the GM again.
Whats more olikely is that I' will be stressed put a year from now because of work, financial issues, or health problems in my family. I'll be damn lucky if I can get together with friends and have a game session or two.

SixLetterSystem, I hope. Crunch is driving me crazy :)
Quote from: Ronin;289978What system is Starblazer Adventure supposed to use? Cause from the little cube7 blurp it sounds like it would be the ticket to run a Dan Dare adventure.
Starblazer uses a variant of the FUDGE system. It does it very well, getting rid of the number one flaw that system had, the stupid "fudge dice".
RPGPundit
I think Fudge dice are kind of fun, but whatever works.
I have no idea what I will be playing in one year. It is too far away.
I know I wont be running anything d20 or D&D for a while. I need a serious break from stat blocks and level progression, as a GM anyway.
...Wierd. The first load of the page, I got text that sorta resembled peoples' posts and was sorta readable. Almost like someone ran it through an obscuring program.
Shit, Narf is on to us.

...You can't try to take over the world! It's MINE! Mine, you hear me?! All mine!
Well, the 100% true and honest answer is that I don't have a fucking clue. That said, I intend to be still running my RQ Vikings game, and also I will have finished my Gates of Karshit RQ campaign and will be playing Griffin Island in my RQ homebrew.
Probably I will be running CoC, because I always end running the fucker. It's so good.
Well, let's see what happened.
I'm still running my RQ game The Gates of Karshit (coming to a close this Saturday actually), so we haven't started yet Griffin Island. I intend to propose the players to make their PCs cross a planar rift (described as Ningauble's cave in Lankhmar world) so they travel out of the Earth to retrieve the Sword of the Winds and get some flying mounts (Griffin mounts! That rocks!)
Also, as I predicted, I ran CoC but RL got in the way and it's on a hiatus. Sucks. We're starting any time soon (chargen is this Sunday) a campaign of Mutants in Shadows, a Spanish game where Jason Bourne meets the X-Men. You play a mutant secret agent working for a mutant secret service that fights the secret services of the main governments, who try to enslave your people and use them as tools, while the world ignores all this shadowy war.
How much does that rock? It breaks my rocking threshold, I say. Also, the villians of the campaign will be neonazis, which is a plus always.
How about you?
Still playing D&D4E, of course.
Quote from: Nihilistic Mind;289913I will be playing Houses of the Blooded: Wilderness game, Houses of the Blooded: Slumming game, Call of Cthulhu, Sorcerer and Amber.

Nevermind on the Houses of the Blooded supplements I was intending to play/run... They're not happening for a little while.
My friend never ended up running his Sorcerer mini-campaign (which turns out I'm not sad about).
I haven't played or run an Amber game in a while.
And although I DID run a Call of Cthulhu mini-campaign and a couple of one-shots, I have been running a very intricate little campaign of Legend of the Five Rings, 1st Edition.
I was all wrong!
Although, I can honestly say I'm not unhappy with my past gaming year at all. Friday nights are for L5R RPG and a monthly one-shot to keep our group from burning out on the heaviness of the campaign's plots and setting.
I am playing High Valor, E.o.N (Empire of Night.) Next year? Hellas
Online Group: 4e Dungeons & Dragons.
Table Group: Pathfinder if another player GMs after the current game, or Fantasy Craft if I get the slot to GM next.
Play-by-Post: anything really, this is where I really get to experiment and play new systems.
Cool bump! One year ago I posted:
Quote from: Benoist;289888Castles & Crusades, AD&D/OSRIC. Call of Cthulhu.
Right now, I'm on
Swords & Wizardry/OD&D and
AD&D/OSRIC. :)
I'm contemplating doing something with
Traveller as well.
I haven't run d20 since my last post, though Iron Heroes was singing in my ear.
I am currently trying to work on a REIGN game, which is a whole new bag of tricks for me.
My group would like to see another Star Wars Saga Edition series, but I just can't bring myself to do it just yet.
Hopefully our group will play Spirit of the Century, Diaspora, or something else FATE 3.0 before we turn to the ORE. But we have to finish our D&D 4e series first.
Quote from: Zachary The First;289782As the topic says: what RPG do you think you'll be playing a year from now? Will it still be 3e, 4e, or OD&D? Is there a game you'd LIKE to play a year from now? Anything you plan to switch to? What's your prediction on what you'll be playing in one year?
I keep having issues with 4E so I'm not sure whether it will be 4E, Pathfinder if it is an improvement to 3.5 or just back to 3.5.
I'm absolutely sure I'm going to be playing Fringeworthy. Thanks to our podcast I've never had more ideas on cool stuff to do. If only my damn players would pick up their feet and move along so I could get to more cool bits ;p
We might be trying out the Savage Worlds version at that time, but it will be Fringeworthy for sure.
A year from now we will probably see me still playing Savage Worlds, BASH, and the rare 4E game. The games I would like to be playing are Witch Hunter, Earthdawn and the Dresden Files RPG. Possibly Icons, also.
I'd LIKE to be playing Call of Cthulhu and Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader... maybe one-shots of The Whispering Vault... but I'm realizing none of that is gonna happen with my current group, they're still talking about doing 4e D&D and I'm thinking I might bow out if they go there... so unless I find a new group I might not be playing at all... except for my kids games.
Quote from: beejazz;289952I will be finished with my homebrew and be running it next year.
Well that didn't happen. Right now I'm playing in a FASERIP game on Google wave. I'm pretty sure this is my first time actually playing in a non-D20 system.
Still 4e. In between then, I've played Shadowrun 4e, nWoD, WFRP, Call of Cthulu, True20, and Rogue Trader, albeit most of those were short campaigns or one-shots. I've been running a Dark Heresy PbP that's spanned the entire length of time. I've also played in a BRP and another DH PbP. In the upcoming year, I will most likely play more 4e, WFRP, BRP, Rogue Trader and maybe nWoD.
I'll still be playing the same one, HeroQuest.
Now what setting I'll be using?
I have done:
Dad's Army
Firefly/Serenity
Glorantha
Heroes
Supernatural
Looking at
Battlestar Galactica
The Shield
Avatar
Star Trek [new one]
Call of Cthulhu
Any other options?
Quote from: Darran;364374Any other options?
Ragnarok, with Viking player characters in a world coming to its ultimate end, the return of the Gods and the Giants, and all goes to Hell in a handbasket. With an open system like HeroQuest, and reinterpreted runes based on the Futhark (http://www.sunnyway.com/runes/meanings.html), that could be awesome.

It turned out a tad more optimistic than that.
I DID wind up being a GM again - running
GURPS with a mostly new group of people. Got only one carryover/legacy player from the GURPS:TRAVELLER campaign that ran from 2004 to 2008.
The group has kind of agreed to do 4 to 5 Star Trek setting sessions, then 4 to 5 INFINITE WORLDS game sessions - then they (we) all decide which to go back to and continue.
- Ed C.
I didn't post anything when this thread first came up, but I never, ever, would have guessed that I'd be playing in an online game of Doctor Who, putting together an online game a 1600s-era Call of Cthulhu, running a bi-weekly game of Decipher's Lord of the Rings RPG and infrequent one-shots of Supernatural.

Steal away, dude, steal away! I actually did something comparable using the New WoD rules (with basically dot ratings for runes, and a global Wyrd rating aside from Willpower, akin to fate or destiny), and it was a blast.
The synergy with HeroQuest could be absolutely brilliant.
