Title: What is your favorite generic system?
Post by: Mcrow on October 11, 2006, 01:01:26 PM
Which is your favorite and why?

I like True 20, Fudge, D20 Modern, and GURPS.

If I had to pick one, I guess I would say D20 Modern.

I clicked Other because Savage Worlds is my current go-to generic game.  I like Fudge as well though.  And I'm this close >< to buying a copy of True20.

Unisystem.  There's two main different kinds and lots of 'dials' in the game that lets you get the feel you want.  As I'm big into genre emulation, this makes the game very valuable to me.

true20 is my game of choice.

Early on, the poll is swayed strongly in favor of "Other", which suggests to me that the specific options may have been chosen poorly.

Me?  I'd lean toward BRP for most "generic" uses.

It's actually a toss-up, and since two of mine aren't on your list, had to vote 'Other'.

If it's gonna be a high-power, pretty high action kind of game, I grab my Tri-Stat dX. For fantasy gaming, it's True20 - if I'm killing a monster with a sword, I have to roll a d20. For anything else, I either convert Interlock (for gear-heavy games) or the Heroquest system (for PC-power heavy games).

Edit for spelling/words missing - I'm going to bed.

I recommend re-doing the poll as multiple choice, and expanding the list of options.

My favorite? Dangerous Journeys of course. d20 is also good for those who like classes and levels.

I've also run across a rather obscure multi/universal genre system, Perfect20. Takes d20 in directions you'd think d20 couldn't go.

Perfect20 is Levi's system.

It's also quite impressive, in my opinion. It's a damn fine statement of just how light you can make d20 without stripping it of its...d20-ness. I have noted with interest he says he can go lighter still...

I've heard some such things, but haven't made the time yet to check it out. I hope to at least do a read though by end of the year.

No wonder nobody's heard of it, Levi has an exagerrated sense of his own unimportance.

It's about 20 pages. You could finish a read through by the end of the week.

Edit:  I misread this, yes, Levi undersells himself and his work.

Perfect 20 is cool, and I really like True 20.  I also love Risus for all my on-the-fly and one-shot needs.

I seldom use generic systems, but when I do, I go with BRP.

GURPS, hands down.  It's my favorite generic system, but I rarely run it, as I don't like generic systems overmuch.

Rather obviously I went d20 Modern.

However I ran GURPs for years and think it's a fantastic system, it's just been supplanted by d20 for me and my group.

I like classes and levels and HP. The mechanical core of d20 is the best system ever designed.

I'd rate True 20 a strong 3rd. I recently converted Legends of Excalibur and thought was very well done (True 20 that is).

I'm a Savage Worlds devotee.
I'm also getting pretty interested in True20.
