This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

More details here.

Short version - more females than I expected; more youth than I expected.

Quite interesting.

Good stuff, James.

I always think of winter as the "doldrums" of the RPG community--not as many games coming out, the post-Gen Con buzz has largely worn off, fewer new threads out there (just check this forum), everyone waiting for spring's rash of new games--but truth is, stuff's always still going on.

Out of curiousity, you mentioned LG--did anyone say anything on their feelings about Living Greyhawk being on its way out?

I'm in the process of writing up that in a different thread over on d20 Haven.  I wanted to keep the two issues separate - demographics in one, opinions in the other - so the possible flames from the latter don't drown out any questions people might have about the former...

Absolutely.

Anyhow, on demographics, regarding the females--how many seemed novices, how many seemed old hands at gaming?

I'm not a bit surprised.
There are more women - of all ages into gaming now than most people realize.  Many of them are now the DMs and GMs.

Ask me over there - you have an account ;) :D

Seriously - most were old hands at gaming.  Of the under 25 but over 15 females, they seemed well versed (probably better than I am) in the rules.  The 18 year old girl that played at the same table as I for the first two slots on Saturday was playing a multi-classed something or other (like a rogue/range or rogue/wizard or something) and had it all down pat.

The over 25 females are all, to my knowledge and recollection, regulars - that is I've seen most of them at previous conventions. I almost played one of the new COWS adventures with the author - a woman.

EDIT: Just for completeness sake since it's cross-forum posted, I responded there with an interesting note from the COWS Yahoo group - wherein a father is asking about scheduling for his son (13th Level Cleric), daughter (16th Fighter), and her boyfriend (15th level Psion). Not only does it relate to the "are the female's novices" question (hard to get to 16th, even as a fighter, and still be a novice), but look at the family thing going - I see a lot of that. Anyway, details here
