This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What do you get out of D&D edition wars?

Quote from: Cole;459633Well, I don't run background checks on posters unfamiliar to me, and I usually try to give people the benefit of the doubt that they're only acting combative because it may take time to develop or renew immunity to the native trolls. But then I'm a real prince, ain't I?

You are far too kind!

Quote from: misterguignol;459630Wait, you guys haven't added him to your ignore lists yet?  I mean...he's kinda infamous for pulling this shit elsewhere, so there's no reason to think that he's here to have an actual discussion.

I have always supported people using all the tools available to them to have the discussions they desire, including ignore lists.

Also, you are flat lying about my history elsewhere.  I was banned from rpg.net for calling a shit thread shit, not for asking questions that excluded a middle.

Glad to help.

Haha, in my brief tenure here that has been my favorite thing that has been said to me here.  Seriously, it brings a smile to my face...the sheer absurdity of it!

Quote from: JDCorley;459617estar gave his opinion, which was that it was not just valued, but was the defining element.

I will also add the term Old School Renaissance was applied to an existing group of gamers that were already playing and publishing for older editions. It wasn't a group deciding that Old School meant older D&D only as some think.

The combination of the OSR, Mongoose, KenzerCo, Goodman Games, Necromancer Games, Troll Lord Games, and others, reignited a general interest in old school gaming of all type not just older editions of D&D.

The old school niche expanded because of the D&D 4e fiasco causing a bunch of gamers to look for alternatives. Many of them became Paizo fans but a fair number found themselves playing old school games in general.

Quote from: danbuter;459417Elfdart, are you converting all the clerics in your campaign to the new, WotC-official rules?  :huhsign:

Nope, didn't catch that one.
Jesus Fucking Christ, is this guy honestly that goddamned stupid? He can\'t understand the plot of a Star Wars film? We\'re not talking about "Rashomon" here, for fuck\'s sake. The plot is as linear as they come. If anything, the film tries too hard to fill in all the gaps. This guy must be a flaming retard.  --Mike Wong on Red Letter Moron\'s review of The Phantom Menace

Quote from: Gene Weigel;459439I wonder what "non-fundamental" product is so important that its such a worry to this guy.

Elfdart how can anybody give a crap about your emphasis on "good" in late TSR when there isn't anything that calls for such faithfulness? There is no "edition war" except in your own mind. There are fans of one thing and fans of another and some who use it all.

What the fuck are you talking about?

Quote from: David Johansen;459475I'll admit that many people want many different things.  I'll freely admit that my own perspective is significantly warped by my desire to see WotC die a horrible death.  So I would see an OSR juggernaut that outsold 4e and Pathfinder as a good thing.

Castles and Crusades failed to be a return to the old school style while similtaneously failing to be a lite and streamlined modern game.  Some love it and some can't stand it.  I wish I could love it but can't stand it in practice.

Had it been an attempt at a very clean and tight system I'd have loved it and we'd still have had the OSR because I'm not exactly the majority of D&D players.  But I still wonder if it had just been a cleaned up AD&D 1.5 whether we'd have OSRIC and the second edition clone I can't recall the name of.

I think it's simply a matter of a bunch of different people who like the older versions having different ideas about their house rules/retroclones/whatever. I don't think that it a bad thing, though. The whole reason the old games remain popular enough that people can actually sell their house rules is the fact that from the beginning people molded the game to fit what they wanted it to be. Good for them.

Sorry guys, but I don't see JDCorley as a troll, not in the least.

For starters, he has created some of the most useful and awesome threads I've seen in RPG.net or Story-games.com on how to get the most out of the FR setting books, his WoD/Vampire threads in Story-games, and many more. As far as I've seen, his position is that the divides between storygames and RPGs are asinine, and he will tell it so here and at tthe FOrge, and he also thinks that GNS is bollocks. In every thread I've seen her he has thrown great ideas, and asked a lot of things.

Now, if you're not getting what he says is probably due to the limitations of the medium of Internet, but maybe you are a bit too entrenched in your positions. Guys, you know I like most of you and I like this place, but sometimes you can become real zealots. Just give it a thought.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

Heh, this is like some haunted battlefield where the ghost troops had no idea what the call to war was about back then so they blame some known vocal personality (but wholly irrelevant non-participant) of the period for their damnation...

and apparently, have a soul-sucking attack that involves forcing opponents to dance together intimately...

Oh, I do think he's got a point, Ramon. I know JD from other boards. He's not dumb, nor is he a complete asshole, for that matter -yes, you can easily find way worse than an aggressive use of irony on the internet. What I'm not willing to put up with ad nauseam is the evading, over-the-top rhetoric camouflaging a lack of willingness to acknowledge that his interlocutors, while they seem to be saying something he disagrees with, might actually have a point themselves.

The best jokes are the shortest.

JD behaves like a zealot himself. He just happens to be championing grey areas.

As I said before I don't pretend to be able read minds and I didn't feel the need to run a background check on the guy. If he doesn't intend to come off as a troll, not hard to correct.
