This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What do you get out of D&D edition wars?

Quote from: JDCorley;459524Cool, thanks for the info. It sounds like from your perspective, (rehashing old materials, new things with old materials, new materials using the original rules) that the original rules, or something pretty close to it, is an important element?

It the whole point. What people have to realize that just because you use an older edition of rules doesn't mean you game in a particular way, or have a particular attitude. In most cases it boils down to a simple preference that you like playing with those rules.

At one time in the mid 00s it was possible that Troll Lord Games could have dominated older edition gaming like Paizo does for 3.X gaming. But circumstances played out differently and now there are no gatekeepers.

So like the rest of us, no one in particular, then.  Congratulations, though, you breathe the rarefied air of those few elite who stomp their feet and demand to be taken seriously despite all evidence to the contrary.

QuoteBecause you went to the trouble of responding to what I wrote.
Only to play out a bit more rope to hang yourself with.  To wit:

QuoteI see reading plain English isn't really your strong suit. I've said repeatedly that I prefer the older editions. So either you need a remedial reading class or you're just a dishonest little asshole.
Awwwww...  Isn't hims so cuuuute?  Throwing around vulgarities like a big boy!

QuoteFeel free to show where pure, unaltered 1E AD&D was ever actually played. Gygax never did it, nor did the others at TSR. They either omitted "official" rules or added new ones -as well as unofficial ones. The only people pretending to follow the Holy Writ word for word are the grogtards, and like other fundies, they are full of shit.
Unlike the others, then, you really are in possession of the One True Way.

QuoteSomeone's got sand in his pussy. Awww, what's wrong, does your pussy hurt?
Adorable!

Are you sure?  I would swear the Squire of Triangles is wild on the first Friday after a full moon.

Thanks, so in contrast to others, you would say that Dungeon World (using Apocalypse World's rules) would not be part of this tradition. Cool, that's what I understood too.

I see you've seen through the Oath of Secrecy and recognized Rob as the Gatekeeper! 10/10!

Quote from: estar;459453So your contention is that nobody who labels themselves as part of the OSR does original work in the fantasy genre?

No, the bannerhead people have done slick conversions but haven't really done the design legwork is what I was saying. Its just a few shifts and its "their baby". If thats the case, then screw that and make your own rules. Pushing rpg stats bereft of a system has been around for a long time so why bother to promote bad merchandise? If there is a true OSR then let it be free of this trademarked gimmickry and landgrabbing. Let it stand on its own legs.

Your inability to name the name of the people you are talking about and the bad product you are referring to is merely an extension of you earlier in joke posts.
Your genius is too special for us, we'll never appreciate you.

I haven't check the red box hack, but check out the old school hack, its predecessor, and though it's not my cup of tea, I was fairly impressed by the stuff the guy came up with. Pretty cool, IMO.
