This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What do you get out of D&D edition wars?

I think the lack of comprehension of my short shrifted prose going on here in general is perhaps because its the typical mob mentality to fear and destroy what they don't understand.

Perhaps, this flesh golem will help it make more sense...

No, Frankenstein, they're saying that I'm retarded or on drugs...

Well, I'm saying I agree with you Gene and generally think you're right.  Like I've said a few times the problem is that everyone wants to tell you how to play their way not how to play your own way.  Even the guys who love OD&D because it said "play it your way" are saying "play it our way, everything else is crap."

I don't think it's OSR exclusive it's my experience of Rolemaster's fan base, and the SJG company mentality, and the Traveller fan base.

Don't be ridiculous "everyone"  does no such thing. There are certain people everywhere in the world within every facet of existence who want to tell others how to go about their business, they are not everyone. they may not even be a majority of people playing and creating in this case.

However thank you for cracking the code of chode, although I'm a little disappointed that the answer was such a simple cliche.

Physician heal thyself?

No, the problem is that we didn't get a united front for old school play we got a fragmented range of uncompatible solutions that fit to very small niches.  The root of the problem is that Troll Lord games rode the designer's personal hobby horses to town instead of trying to broaden their appeal.  If C&C had been a better design the OSR would be a foot note.

People here are constantly saying OSR games need better support and we need more modules and settings and less new games but since every OSR game is someone's own house rules, play styles, and hobby horses (mine included) we just get more and more OSR games with no support.

In an infinitely fracteous hobby where the only way any concensus is reached is when a company does a top down product with expensive hard backs and graphic design because a non-gamer in a suit threw a wrestling hold on everyone and told them how it was going to be done, bitterness isn't so surprising from where I sit.

Indeed.

Also, there are plenty of modules and settings. conversion from one TSR version of D&D to another is hardly difficult. Bitterness my not be surprising, but it is a waste of time, and it is no excuse for being rude (i.e. speaking in bullshit hippy code) to people who had nothing to do with the original conflict. AT ALL.

Furthermore, getting upset because everyone isn't united under the same banner is exactly the same thing as getting upset because everyone isn't playing the way you think they should be, plain and simple.

The bitterness is surprising from my perch.  Consensus was a goal here? Or valuable?  Who knew?

You know, I know exactly the mood, and can earnestly recommend Nietzsche's Ecce Homo for bedtime reading to complement the mood. Chapter 1, 'Why I am so brilliant.', chapter 2, 'Why I am so wise' - you get the gist. Before you know, you'll be in tears and hug beaten horses, and then off to the looney bin you are.

At this point, busting the balls of Weigel, thedungeondouchebag, TFoster and other grogtards would really just be piling on. For me it's never been about favoring one edition over another, but in heckling idiots, miscreants and bullshitters who think someone died and made them keepers of the True First Edition Way, which (a) does not exist and more importantly (b) never did exist. Getting a chuckle out of the orgy of nerd rage that ensues when you point out their stupidity is an added bonus to being right.
Jesus Fucking Christ, is this guy honestly that goddamned stupid? He can\'t understand the plot of a Star Wars film? We\'re not talking about "Rashomon" here, for fuck\'s sake. The plot is as linear as they come. If anything, the film tries too hard to fill in all the gaps. This guy must be a flaming retard.  --Mike Wong on Red Letter Moron\'s review of The Phantom Menace
