This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What do you get out of D&D edition wars?

Gene, that's Elfdart being Elfdart and therefore being a cunt.  I'm entirely sure he/she/it can't back up a single thing said.

For the interested there is a Weigel listed in the book credits for some late 1e books (OA and MM2 I believe) and Gene (correct me if I'm wrong) had joked about the name coincidence.

OMG. I can't believe the butthurt that goes into these posts, trying to restart old fights from Dragonsfoot. Elfdart: stop fishing for a flamewar, put some ointment on that red butthole of yours already and give it up, for fuck's sakes.

I don't even know why anybody would even think answering this sort of old, old bullshit might be a good idea. It's a retarded argument that's been settled years ago, anyway.

It is funny that there are people posting about getting past this crap, and a page later, the butane shows up.

The sad thing is that all it takes in one douche on each side of any issue, and then it just keeps on going. It's old and tired.

I'll believe that when you respond to a post this week.  I'd swear you were in school or something.

The thing about assholery is that it's not something you do all by yourself. It's kind of like hiking with a group. Every step you take moves you further from your starting point. You cannot get back to that point merely by stating that you are finished hiking; furthermore, you can't expect that everyone you're on the journey with you is going to be cool with stopping just because you are tired. It doesn't matter whose idea the hike was, you stepped on the path of your own free will, and it's your responsibility to get where ever you thought it was going to take you, or wherever it is you want to go now.
Also, whatever you do right now, do not think of clown penis.

Gary asked me if I knew Marlene Weigel the first time that I talked to him and I didn't even know what he was referring to (she was from the MONSTER MANUAL II credits as far as I know). I remarked about that.

Currently, I have no regard for or wish to discuss things called "D&D" or "RPG" so the bashers can quietly celebrate that. Besides, to me, the "edition war" is over and I never participated in any "edition war" forum so...

Thats that.

Butthurt? Oh please, it's all good clean fun! As for "trying to restart old fights", why would I do that? I won all those "fights"!

Not that ridiculing the Teabaggers of Gaming takes any great skill or effort, but it is good for a laugh. But then I also frequent a site that specializes in "sci-fi, science, and mockery of stupid people", so maybe my sense of humor is a little warped to find humor in making fun of retards.

Oh, and for the record, I post links to other sites to back up my claims (see below). You must be from the "Let's just make shit up and hope nobody notices" school of internet discussion.

Heaven forbid someone actually answer the question from the OP.

Quote from: Gene Weigel;457547Geez, I didn't say anything like what this guy "ELFDART" is saying. Show me the quote where I say I worked for TSR and maybe I'll say I was drunk but it doesn't exist. Period. Bury that line, its weak, plus I don't even care anymore but keep it up and I'll gladly point out that you're really mistaken about that.

For someone who doesn't care, you show quite a lot of interest.

Really?

By the way, don't you have a long-winded "open letter" to post on half a dozen websites full of people who think you're a blubbering vagina?
Jesus Fucking Christ, is this guy honestly that goddamned stupid? He can\'t understand the plot of a Star Wars film? We\'re not talking about "Rashomon" here, for fuck\'s sake. The plot is as linear as they come. If anything, the film tries too hard to fill in all the gaps. This guy must be a flaming retard.  --Mike Wong on Red Letter Moron\'s review of The Phantom Menace

Interest in what?!? Getting e-mail saying someone is talking about me? Thats about it. As far as games and the fan factions that have lined up over the years, I don't belong to any of them. Gary Gygax is the guy who kept insisting that I speak up on the forums. I never had some notion of defending my gaming group or tastes. Frankly, I'd rather just work with people but the void of mistrust is huge on the internet and its perpetuated this "quick discussion" instead of "building better things".

Add to that the idea that the most vocal people have some shame to defend.

Would I play the new Gamma World? No fucking way. Its ugly as it doesn't have an austereness that would make me feel I'm not playing a product for kids instead a of a fun sci-fi romp.

Say that for a lot of things on the shelf. For example my bookstore has Pathfinder. Which upon browsing has very stylized "product identity" that doesn't fit into anything that I see as a good fantasy universe. The look speaks some strange language that started when collectible card games came into being that I didn't like then and I certainly don't like now. All in all the terms "D&D" and "RPG" just are so problematic because of this dysfunctional feeling of upon perusal that I'm just avoiding them.

There is no long lost "D&D" or "RPG" gem that I haven't seen and this "old school" seems more interested in "product identity" than generating fun new gaming in an authentic non-kiddy (and non-vulgar for that matter) flavor.

So thats why I'm out of this mislabeled confusion. I'd rather just set my course for a different star and be done with being the poster boy for whoever has a beef with RPGs... heh, I never got a red cent out of this shit either.

Gene?  The link in your sig is broken.

Anyhow, what you're saying is pretty much what I've been saying for years.  Though I did write a D&D variant myself it was more a matter of setting down what I think D&D is and it convinced me not to put more effort into it because I don't have much interest in travelling down such a well worn road when there's new stuff to create.

Its a dead site so I just removed the signature link.

I'm going to do a blog (no link yet) with the direct purpose of feeding my creativity and serving fantasy fans. Basically, to stop being a cheerleader for things out of my control.

That's likely the best way.  If I poured the time into The Delver's Dungeon that I've spent posting on forums I'd have eclipsed other websites by now.
