This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Battlestar Galactica rpg?

I've heard a BSG rpg is coming out, I hope it's not done as badly as the most recent load of TV series to rpg games have been, I.E. SG-1, farscape and firefly, but it likely will be.

As soon as there's a BSG technical manual that gives some details on some things, I'm going to do a gurps version.

Has anyone here done a BSG game yet and if so what system did you use?
RPGPundit is a fucking fascist asshole and a hypocritial megadouche.

To begin, I really love the show.  Having said that....

I've been really apathetic when it comes to RPGs based on licensed TV/Movie material. I think my apathy started with "The Babylon Project" RPG which I had really high hopes for. The Bab Project RPG really crystalized several things I dislike about TV/Movie/Book property based RPGs:

1.  "You should play before/after the currently running plotline in the TV/Movie/Book."

What? No Fun you say!  You don't want to be the Death Star Debris Cleanup Crew?  You don't want to be the guys that push the "On" switch for the "Babylon 5" station? Just think of the roleplaying possibilities!

2.  "You should play in a remote area of the universe/world/city where the current plot of the TV/Movie/Book will not be disrupted by PC shennanigans".

Why don't you guys adventure on the opposite side of the galaxy from Tatooine/Earth/The Federation?

3.  (Related to 2)"Since the TV Show/Movie/Book is ongoing, why don't you not play the big movers and shakers of the universe. "

Maybe you should play moisture farmers on Tatooine?  A crew on a refuleling ship that tops off the Enterprises Dilithium Crystals?

4.  "Background? you don't need no stinking background!"

Since the TV/Movie/Book story/plot is ongoing and the turnaround time for review of the RPG materials takes just short of a 100 years, here is your background:  "Space.  The Final Frontier."   Run with it!!!!

I'm sure there are others (re: TSR's Indiana Jones RPG as an example of how not to create adventures for licensed properties or FASA's wacky character creation for Doctor Who)

I'm being too negative:  I did like Victory Games James Bond 007 RPG.  The adventures were cool (handouts/production values for the time were great).  The source books were cool (Q Manual - Who doesn't want a ski-pole rocket.  Can't I just jam it down my tuxedo pant leg?)

Back to Battlestar Galactica. What RPG would I use?...I would probably use Ron Edwards Sorcerer.  You see, Cylons are really demons and the Colonials are really trying to bind them and use th...er...are you buying this? No?  Good.

I think maybe I'd try Savage Worlds or a different lighter RPG system.

Or maybe Spacemaster...:)

I think MWP (publishers of the Serenity rpg) have the license to BSG for an RPG.

From what I hear the owners of BSG IP are much more willing to work with MWP than the folks who own the Firefly/serenity IP are. So hoepfully it will be a better showing. It also sounds like they will be using they same system, though it will be heavily modified.

There was a very in-depth d20 Future effort done on the WotC boards, which was put into pdf form. Let me see if I can find the thread...ah, here it is:

http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=492021
"Illegitimis non carborundum." - General Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

You can download the pdf of the work done in the thread above here:

The guy who did much of the grunt work on the Galactica d20 stuff also did Advanced Starship Combat Rules, but they're buried in the longer thread. He made a thread for them alone here:
