This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What are your favorite settings?

Quote from: AkrasiaGood stuff, those ICE ME modules!  My only complaint: the MERP/Rolemaster system was a poor fit for Tolkien (esp. the magic system).

I must agree with you. But likely for different reasons.

On the bright side, I had no trouble converting from their stats to the home brew system I used. So this downside didn't affect me.

All in all, the best published modules ever.

Actually, the mention of ICE reminds me that in addition to ICE's Middle-Earth stuff, I quite liked Shadow World by Terry K. Amthor.

It's a very cool setting (albeit with some background 'sci-fi' mixed into the fantasy, which I like but many do not).

Here here! I really love maps, both real and fictional. RPGs often have decent and enjoyable maps, but the MERP ones really rock. I think all the maps associated with LotR are pretty cool, RPG or no.

Quote from: AkrasiaThose were really great.  The maps were beautiful, and the campaign books included tonnes of useful information and material.  The Angus McBride covers were generally very cool (but I also liked the earlier Gail McIntosh [sp?] covers as well), and the internal art by Liz Dansforth was also consistently good.

I pretty much agree with all this. The only real complaint I have with these books is that some of them seemed to be written by people who really didn't know much about Tolkien or didn't really "get" the setting. The best example of this is in the Dunland book. I like the book, and there are some decent ideas that can be mined from it, but...
Spoiler
the elves living in the flying castle just don't seem very Tolkien-ish to me, especially the elf performing the "Doctor Moreau" experiments. A true WTF?

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

The ICE Middle Earth maps are my favorite Middle Earth maps. It's too bad they never made one giant poster out of the ones found in the sourcebooks. The one they made of all of Middle Earth is nice, but it has none of the beautiful detail of all those other maps.

In order to qualify as a roleplaying game, a game design must feature:

1. A traditional player/GM relationship.
2. No set story or plot.
3. No live action aspect.
4. No win conditions.

Don't like it? Too bad.
