Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). What are the 4e fanboys saying now?

Some people don't ever get over anything.  They carry the resentment to the very day they die.

Yes, but the half life of this sort of thing is the next edition. Once it comes out, 4e will be suddenly transformed from lead into gold.

For some individuals, they genuinely enjoy being a "martyr".  They like to shoulder all of the world's problems on their own backs.

I'm just not sure what these shitheads think they are accomplishing.

Here's what I'm doing in three days: I'm going to DDXP. It's going to be awesome. It's going to be 4 days straight of gaming. I'm running Gamma World, a pair of adventures of my own design, and the LFR Special (which involves an ancient tree in Myth Drannor that holds the remains of power that belong to the dead god Moander). Just counting the gaming- it's 50 hours (at 5 hours per game). Also there's like 8 hours a night of sleeping in there.

It's brilliant.

For some individuals I know locally, this is already happening since the introduction of 4E Essentials.  For them, they refuse to acknowledge the existence of 4E Essentials.  In the 4E games they DM, they only permit WotC 4E books published from May 2008 to August 2010.  In regard to the DDI character builder, they only allow the old offline one in their games.

They share a similar mentality to the people who believe the world will end on December 21, 2012?  :rotfl:

It must be a terrible burden for you to bear, being a man of such devotion to your One True Game. The cross you've nailed yourself to must really wear you down.
"Meh."

I actually agree with this, provocation aside.

It's not a burden at all, I really like D&D. It's really too bad we cant talk about it here.

Insufficient Metal

I don't dislike D&D. I'm not too fond of TSR / Wizards' business practices, but that's been true since 2nd Edition.

And I don't have a horse in the 4E race, I just like being a smartass.

The main reason why I bothered playing 4E over the last few years, is largely due to the lack of any desirable local players/groups playing previous editions of D&D.  Most of the local players I've gamed with over the years, largely moved on to 4E when it was first released in June 2008.

The few leftover local players who still played 3E/3.5E, largely consisted of individuals I refused to play any rpg games with.  When Pathfinder was first released, I found that most of the local Pathfinder players were largely individuals whom I refuse to play any rpg games with.  (Most of the local Pathfinder players were from the 3E/3.5E crowd who didn't move on to 4E, and some 4E players who found 4E wasn't to their taste).

For older TSR editions of D&D/AD&D, most of the local groups I came across consisted of individuals whom I refused to play any rpg games with in the past and/or the groups only played once a month (or once every two/three months).  One was a group with individuals whom (I suspected) were high functioning autistic types, where they could spend hours and hours searching through an area with the DM repeatedly saying "you find nothing" at a rhythm of every 30 seconds.

There's all kinds of reasons as to why I refuse to play rpg games with particular individuals.  Many of the reasons are related to things like:

- heavy alcohol/drug consumption before and during a game
- violent tempers always flaring up
- physical altercations
- intoxicated behavior
- game venue is too far away (for my convenience)
- players who spend more time talking about "politics" and their own personal problems, than playing the game
- etc ...

Quote from: two_fishes;434425The majority of our 4e sessions are combat, and I'm pretty happy with that for D&D, especially when it's as dynamic and fun as 4e combat. If that were the only game in town, I might be upset, but it's not--tonight for e.g. we got some Lacuna. 4E is a great game. It's not all things for all people but so what?

So basically the narrativist is saying that he is alright with D&D being a mainly tactical combat game.  He has other games to explore role-playing.  No big surprise there.

This is the core thinking behind Pundit's charge that 4e is the "D&D that Ron Edwards built."  Make D&D purely gamist, that's all GNSers ever saw in it anyway.

However a sizeable chunk of the D&D audience (ie. the people who like D&D but aren't playing Pathfinder or 4e) played D&D as they played all RPGs, with a focus on world emulation and character immersion.  Those D&D players basically got the kiss off.

I wouldn't like to see Dungeons and Dragons as a brand tank, but also don't think it would stay down for very long.  Someone would buy it even if they only wanted it for the merchandising and online games, and then license the trpg rights.  I wonder what the kings of licensed games, C7, would do with D&D.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

They aren't accomplishing anything.  They are bitter, ex-gamers who have nothing better to do then insult the games others enjoy.

People Like 1989 and Jeff aren't gaming and they are bitter to hear that people like you and I are playing D&D 4e and are having fun.  They wish they were gaming and having fun and it burns thems they they cant be.

Perhaps their attitudes is exactly why they arent gaming.  If they act like they do on here, I can only imagine they are just as unbearable in person

I'm somewhat agnostic about the choice of game system, if the people playing are relatively pleasant to game with.  4E may not be my first choice of a system, but I'm willing to put that aside to play 4E with some groups of players.

My personal preference would be to play 1E AD&D, but at the present time I'm not playing it at all.  The unpleasantness of the local 1E AD&D groups I'm aware of, very much overrides my preference for the game.

People come first.  Choice of game system is secondary.
