This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What are the 4e fanboys saying now?

Quote from: Seanchai;440002So you believe that a program that brings in an unspecific "few" new gamers at one store is going to have a noteworthy impact on D&D and/or gaming?

Really?
Seanchai

Nope. Of course I never actually said anything remotely like that, so you really shouldn't be surprised at my answer.  You mentioned earlier that...

Quote from: Seanchai;440002I have yet to encounter (get it?) or hear of an Encounters player who hasn't played D&D or an RPG before.

All I said was, that there were some in one of the larger FLGS's here.  That was it.  For all I know, the Encounters experience may have led them to swear off RPGs forever.

As I mentioned in another post, if WotC wanted to have "noteworthy impact", they should have gotten Encounters events going in Borders and Barnes and Noble.

No. I've been in Borders when they've had their special events. Watching an author sit there at a table at the front of the store, begging people with his eyes to actually come up and talk with him, doesn't exactly inspire confidence in Borders or their process...

Isn't Borders in Chapter 11 right now?

Authors go to Colorado to sell books?  Since when?  :D

I don't know what Borders is like in the reading capital of Colorado, but in both Northern and Southern California, Borders are quite busy, children's events, music, book clubs.  On the weekend there's always something going on at the cafe tables.  Different culture I guess.

Yeah, they dropped the whole internet ball.  No e-store for e-readers, they had Amazon do their orders, just had no business plan for it.  Regentrification is bringing back the small, intimate bookstore for upscale clients in a lot of cities, so they're getting squeezed at both ends.

Supposedly they're gonna shut down 1/3 to 1/2 of their stores (probably in fly-over states), but without a good e-reader policy (like say, letting you buy and download e-books from within the store like B&N but let you do it multiple formats to support all e-readers) they're probably going to have to close up shop.

And, from what I understand, Barnes and Noble is doing just fine, so WotC could run events there if they wanted.

Abyssal Maw

You can totally run Encounters at Borders or Barnes and Noble or any public location. It's dependent on volunteers.

if you want to *be* a volunteer talk to a store manager.

Not a slam on 4E, but a lot depends on the store manager. Some do not want you in there running a game, even if it is good advertising for the books they are trying to sell.

I've tried several times to run games at our local bookstores and the managers at the time just didn't want people hanging around gaming. I have not tried lately, though.
"Meh."

If you think people don't read in Colorado, apparently you don't know shit.
