This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). What are the 4e fanboys saying now?

That's not what I'm seeing on RPGnet, ENWorld, WotC's boards and Circus Maximus, to name a few.

Sure, you find some people who think like you do, that 4e and Essentials are the exact same game, but by and large, there are many, many people who do not think they are the same, and are still gaming, incidentally. Furthermore, from what I'm seeing, there are more people who actually like 4e that are peeved about Essentials than people who didn't like 4e to begin with on the message boards I read. Just my observation.

Unless you're saying you're like the last person on all these mentioned message boards that is actually truly gaming, or that people who do not think like you do are de facto non gamers, which honestly wouldn't make any sense.

The Butcher

Quote from: Benoist;434451I think it's very true when you play Essentials stuff with regular 4e stuff. When I consider Essentials on its own, however, I feel like it's got an identity of its own. There is definitely a shift in the feel of the game from what I'm reading from the rules books. More .. traditional is not the word. More swords & sorcery in feel, maybe? I don't know how to describe it. The Thief. The Slayer. The Knight. It feels less gonzo, less dragon ball, more ... D&D.

This is the same feeling I got from Essentials, which almost made me buy it.

It is the same game, though. Funny how presentation changes one's perceptions.

Peregrin

It's the same car, maybe just with different tires, a different shade of paint, and a few interior differences.

To some people, that makes a difference.
"In a way, the Lands of Dream are far more brutal than the worlds of most mainstream games. All of the games set there have a bittersweetness that I find much harder to take than the ridiculous adolescent posturing of so-called \'grittily realistic\' games. So maybe one reason I like them as a setting is because they are far more like the real world: colourful, crazy, full of strange creatures and people, eternal and yet changing, deeply beautiful and sometimes profoundly bitter."

Yep. Also with a new advertising campaign and possibly topless dancing girls with complimentary cheetos.

An attempt to recreate new edition sales without an official new edition IMO.

Quote from: Abyssal Maw;434474All I'm really saying is "what does it matter what I like?" and "Shouldn't I have the right to like what I like?"

Answer those two. And then we'll talk about intellectual dishonesty, bard-boy.

OK.

It does not matter what you like or do not like.

You do have the right to like what you like.

HOWEVER, you should fully expect to get shit thrown right back at you when you have regularly and consistantly been throwing shit at those who do not like your favorite game or have even been critical of it or its parent company in discussions.

You do not have the privilege to be an asshole without consequences, most of which you have reaped on this forum. If you haven't noticed, when you are are not acting like a dick then I and many others do not treat you like a dick.
"Meh."

Well, they aren't saying much - they are still waiting for that combat encounter to end.

Oh the delicious irony of a 2e fan ragging on 4e!

As for my 4e 2011 experience, I am looking forward to running a Gamma World campaign and maybe some Dark Sun.

Quote from: two_fishes;434425The majority of our 4e sessions are combat, and I'm pretty happy with that for D&D, especially when it's as dynamic and fun as 4e combat. If that were the only game in town, I might be upset, but it's not--tonight for e.g. we got some Lacuna. 4E is a great game. It's not all things for all people but so what?

This has always been my opinion as well.  I think 4e is a great action/adventure game for high-powered fantasy.

* If I wanted something more moderately powered and sim-friendly (closer to older D&D), I'd go with Palladium Fantasy (1e).

* If I wanted something more sword and sorcery, I'd go with BRP/Runequest.

* If I wanted something very simmy with heavy character customization, I'd go with GURPS (though I'm not really a fan).

* If I wanted a very human-centric, low-level, political fantasy I'd go with A Song of Ice and Fire.

* If I wanted a less traditional fantasy, I'd go with Earthdawn.

* If I wanted medieval horror, I'd go with Cthulhu Dark Ages.

* If I wanted an overcomplicated mess, I'd go with Fantasy Hero.  :p

Me and my group fall into this category, for example.  I find the relationship between standard 4e and Essentials to be a murky mess of half-compatible vagueness.  Between that and the utter clusterfuck that has been DDI for the last 6-9 months, I haven't the slightest clue what WotC is trying to do with the game lately and am sticking with pre-2010 4e.
Now Prepping: One-shot adventures for Coriolis, RuneQuest (classic), Numenera, 7th Sea 2nd edition, and Adventures in Middle-Earth.

Recently Ended: Palladium Fantasy - Warlords of the Wastelands: A fantasy campaign beginning in the Baalgor Wastelands, where characters emerge from the oppressive kingdom of the giants. Read about it here.
