This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What are the 4e fanboys saying now?

Quote from: David Johansen;434698Yeah there's no special safe room for you here and no mods to ban people for calling you on your bullshit.  Whatever will you do.

I'll be fine. Seriously. Plus if there ever is a 5th edition? It will probably look like 4e with more improvements.

Anyhow, Davy, are you sure you don't  have that wrong? I mean, if all this place is *just* a bunker for former gamers, someone should just say so. But it's not, though, is it? Ultimately, there's no special safe room for you. 4E exists, that's not my fault, I'm just a guy who loves playing it, and it really is the best version of D&D ever published as far as I'm concerned.

Seriously, I'm sorry about Gurps being awful and nobody really caring about the square tonnage of a speedboat since 1996 or whatever. But that's life.

Plus I can at least promise "no nerd rage";  it's immature. It's retarded. It's a sign of a weak personality. If there's a game I don't want to play, I won't play it. Man, simple enough, right?

Quote from: Abyssal Maw;434617Here's what I'm doing in three days: I'm going to DDXP. It's going to be awesome. It's going to be 4 days straight of gaming.

Post a DDXP thread and take pics!

Quote from: CRKrueger;434646However a sizeable chunk of the D&D audience (ie. the people who like D&D but aren't playing Pathfinder or 4e) played D&D as they played all RPGs, with a focus on world emulation and character immersion.  Those D&D players basically got the kiss off.

Did you post this in 2000?

'Cuz the EXACT SAME COMPLAINT was leveled at 3e.

Quote from: Daedalus;434647Perhaps their attitudes is exactly why they arent gaming.  If they act like they do on here, I can only imagine they are just as unbearable in person

Perhaps.

Quote from: ggroy;434650People come first.  Choice of game system is secondary.

Yes.

Quote from: Reckall;434704Lars von Trier puts out very good movies aimed at a very small slice of public.

If I took Uwe Bol's next movie and switched out the credits with Lars von Shitty, there is no doubt the critics would swoon and exclaim breathlessly about the "daring" and the "brilliance" of the movie.

I don't know, I see as much nerd rage from you and other 4e fanboys as I do from the people who hate it.  You certainly don't just say, "Fine you're right it's not D&D but we like it anyhow."  Nope, you call names with the rest of us supposed ex-gamers.

And GURPS doesn't suck.  4e GURPS is the best edition since first, but it's still not as good as first.  But that happens, it could have been better than first, they'd have had to done better with supers, and GURPS Vehicle Design is long over due, though I'm afraid it likely won't be as good as the original.  What ever is eh?

I actually played Savage Worlds in a 1930's pulp game Friday night.  My friends were a bit trigger happy for my tastes and Savage Worlds isn't one of my favorite games but at least it wasn't the D&D 4e game we played in a couple years ago.  That was brutal, and so totally the DM's fault that  even I can't say 4e was the problem.

I'm trolling about for players for a Rolemaster campaign at the moment since ICE seems to be back on track.  But no, I don't game as much as I'd like.  A bit with my kids, a bit of Warhammer with the guys at the flgs, and a bit with my friends when we can put it together.  A guy with responsibilities often has to put them before gaming.

But ex-gamer?  Not in the least.  Now I could start a discussion of why 4e isn't really even a game, but that would get silly.

It was true then too, you'd think after Everway WotC would have figured out that they just can't do rpgs.

They need to bring back AD&D. AD&D was the best. Everyone that doesn't like 1e/2e, and only came back for 3e/4e can f*ck off.

Nah.  They should really bring back the original 1974 version of D&D.  ;)

As long as there's no miniatures involved, I would be okay with that.

I actually, seriously, would welcome this. And/or First Ed.

True, the build mentality and tactical focus of combat started in 3e.  All 4e really did was turn up the dissociation of the rules to 11.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Quote from: Shazbot79;434705I don't agree with this, even though I'm a fan of 4E.

I think it's a great game, even though it has a lot of flaws. Recognizing and discussing a game's various blemishes is the best way to brainstorm improvements. I don't know about you, but I haven't found a game yet that I didn't want to houserule in some manner or another.

But the problem is that people like Jeff and 1989 arent looking for ways to improve the game, they just want to vent and bitch about the game.  They arent looking to be constructive, they are just being trolls.

I have to be honest, I rarely if ever houserule a game.  I generally play a game as written and only houserule if a rule just doesnt work at all.

The problem with 4e is that it's a pile of shit -- a tactical boardgame of fantasy superheroes.

How to improve 4e? Throw it in the garbage and bring back AD&D.

If enough people voice their displeasure (and vote with their wallets), then we may eventually get a game that can meet the needs of many playstyles (as was the case with AD&D) instead of just one playstyle.

The old DIKU muds back in the early 1990's, used a slightly modified THAC0 system (ie. with descending AC) for combat.
