This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: GabrielObviously you've never encountered Mekton II, which was also much improved from it's predecessor.

If you consider the Marvel Super Heroes Advanced Set as the second edition of that game, then it joins the list of improved next editions.

That was something else that came to mind, the revised/updated versions in the 80s/mid 90s like Mekton II, Cyberpunk 2020, Chill, HERO, etc (again IMO) really were improvements. maybe its just that Im getting older and dont like change.

the comment on Warhammers magic was right on however, it is an improvement, we never had a problem with the naked dwarf issue however and played the same campaign for years. As for the sourcebooks, with the 1st edition you only needed one book, everything was included.

Quote from: James McMurrayIt's also a matter of personal preference too. For instance, there are large groups of people that think 3E was the worst thing that ever happened to D&D, or even that it doesn't deserve to bear the name.

That's a perfectly understandable situation. Those people are wrong. ;)

I consider AD&D 3 better than previous editions ...

There was a 3rd edition of AD&D?   Do you mean C&C? ;)

(Exactly why '3e D&D' is considered the 'third edition' -- as opposed to the 8th or 9th 'edition' -- has 100% to do with marketing and 0% with reality.)

Quote from: James McMurrayYep, but only subjectively so. :)

They're subjectively wrong, but objectively right.  :vulcan:

:rimshot:

Well, I consider both C&C and D&D 3 better than previous editions. And yes, dropping the "Advanced" might have been suggested by marketing, but when you don't have the Basic game anymore it makes perfect sense. You reallly don't need to be "advanced" to hack some orcs using the D20 rules...

Actually I think it went D&D > AD&D > Basic D&D... :)

Speaking as someone with 3 and 4 edition gurps, I can say that gurps 4e was something of an improvement, but it lost some of the detail that gurps 3e had. Still, if you want the details from 3e, like hollowpoint bullets fired from low power weapons often failing to mushroom and do more danage, you can easily port them over.

So sometimes even a fourth ed can be an improvement.
RPGPundit is a fucking fascist asshole and a hypocritial megadouche.
