This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Weird things gamers have tried during gaming..

A friend of mine used to play D&D by candle and lamplight, because he believed that kind of lighting made the torchlit world of D&D seem more authentic.

I think his group more or less liked it.

So, what weird things have your game groups tried? I once used a computer and some speakers to create some surround sound effects, but it was too much work for little real benefit.
RPGPundit is a fucking fascist asshole and a hypocritial megadouche.

Yeah, we did the candle thing back in the day for D&D. Nowadays it's just a hassle and doesn't really give that much atmosphere, but when I was 13 it was kill.

Hah!  I still remember my friend trying to read his character sheet by candle light and -- yes, you guessed it -- lighting the sheet of paper on fire.

My friends and I used to occasionally play under the effects of various drugs, mostly alcohol and pot.  However, we never really got anything done, and I had to rule them out of my games completely when a couple of our group started showing up habitually and heavily stoned and wasting everyone's time.

Other than that, not much out of the ordinary.

Yeah, mankind has yet to invent the perfect hallucinogen for DnD.

And the idea had so much potential!

I'll do you one better. Last time my group played by firelight, I ended up on fire.

Dumb-ass friend knocked a candle + stand over onto my back, and the fuzzy/lint-balled sweater I was wearing flared up, all over, for about a second. Scared the shit out of me at the time, but my friends assure me it looked fucking awesome.

There was a time I ownd a decent professional recording studio in my house. I would record some pretty Moody intro's for the games. I'd even occasionally invite one of the Players over to have him record his voice for some in character comments. It was usually a full 6-7 minute score, interlaced with some quotes with the last game or hints at the goings on in the game about to start.

Before the game, I'd turn off the lights, and play the track. It really got people in the mood.

I ran a cut scene with Star Wars action figures as puppets.

Nope.  Not joking.

Have you ever seen the "Adam and Joe Show"?

One guy (we were teenagers) decided he'd have the crazy man hold up the valuable map we needed and light it on fire, and we'd have access to whatever was left after we put it out.  He held it over his trash can for safety, but it singed his fingers and he dropped it in the trash.  That set the whole can on fire, which he had to run out of the house and spray with the garden hose.

Yeah, we had to play in the garage after that.
I have a theory, it could be witches, some evil witches!

First D&D 3 session: The PC barbarian manages to kill or incapacitate the rest of the players (the PC druid didn't like him slaughtering the bears he called for help) and the kobold's lair collapses on them.

I go to my sanctum sanctorum and when I've finished, I see the players lighting their sheets on fire and throwing them down the balcony. Where my neighbours had their car parked underneath...

No serious damage done, but since then I choose my toilet times more carefully.

I still think one of the coolest film scenes ever, is that bit in Reign of Fire where they're retelling the story of Star Wars to the villagers, old fashioned firelight and cave shadow puppets style.

Brilliant scene.  I've heard the rest of the movie sucked though, just never bothered to watch it.

Among other things, they run parodies of movies and other popular culture items like reality TV shows using either soft toys (e.g. "Toytanic" and I forget what they called their version of Showgirls, but it was deeply disturbing) or Star Wars action figures

I think you can probably get the DVD in the States - it's well worth it if you like geek culture
