This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

WEG Star Wars 1987, fastest chargen ever?

So, I bought the first edition of WEG Star Wars from ebay.

Chargen is so fast I missed it on my first readthrough, you pick a template from the back of the book (which hopefully can be downloaded for easy printing from somewhere), you add seven dice of skills to the sheet, as best I can tell equipment is just given you by the GM, you're done.

Lightning fast, of course this is still in the old school period (basically up to 1991) and it really shows, it's an amazingly well done game and very much gets the feel of the setting.

Wow, so, anything out there faster?

RedFox

Feng Shui's just about as fast, and uses the same pick-a-template-and-go system.

RISUS is reasonably fast as well.  You divide 10 dice up amongst however many cliches you like, and you're done.  So a risus character might look like this:

Bobo the Hut
Character info: A crazy hut scav, he builds stuff out of junk.
Cliches:

Trained in the art of whomp-fu [ 3 ], Weird-ass contraptions for any occasion [ 4 ], Intimidating intimations of crime connections [ 3 ]

I have the R&E version of Star Wars and it lists equipment on each template, so the GM doesn't even have to bother with that.

WUSHU would be, in my opinion, also a good fit for Star Wars.  It wasn't around in the 1980's though.

Anyway, let's create a Star Wars WUSHU character, shall we?

Lem Farstar
A cocky smuggler hiding out in the Rim, dodging jail (or worse) in the Corporate Sector.

TRAITS:
   Talk you into anything (5)
Freighter pilot (4)
Two-blaster gunslinger (3)
Doesn't know when to shut up (1)

Yep, WEG Star Wars, Wushu, Feng Shui; also Over The Edge; Prince Valiant; Capes!; all the games based on the PDQ engine such as Truth & Justice, Questers of the Middle Realm, the Ninja Burger RPG, and The Zorcerer of Zo; as well as lots of new little small press games that may or may not have anything to do with The Forge.

I've played a lot of Over the Edge and a fair few Forge games, most of them are not nearly as quick at chargen.  I don't think PDQ is either, though it is pretty quick.

Seriously, you choose a template and add seven dice and you're done, that is very quick.  Even Feng Shui takes longer if you need to choose fu.

O'Borg

Advanced Fighting Fantasy, with three stats, optional skills and a minimal equipment list has to be the fastest out there :)

Not particularly Advanced, mind you..

In Harm's Way template characters are very fast too. Generally Template characters in any system are all very fast to create. They are just not quite so custom built.

Sure, YMMV.  For me these are all in the same range, i.e., we can throw characters together AND go over the rules for any newbies within half an hour.  By then, some of us will even have their character drawn!  :D

As you might guess, I like simple, streamlined character creation.  Especially if I'm the GM!

Fair enough, that makes sense.  Certainly having spent the other night an hour to an hour and a half helping a player create a magician character in Pendragon (and 4th ed is dreadful for finding stuff in) I've been reminded how valuable fast chargen and easily comprehensible rules are.

Spike

Might be another edition, but WEG starwars also allowed you to dispose of the template and divide up your stat dice (14 as I recall) and then your seven dice. Don't forget, you can also split those dice up.  Still pretty fast, ya, but since you felt the need to point out feng shui fu selection...;)
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

18 dice.

Mind you, as a young gamer, I missed that part entirely and made up my own template for a suave, Bond-style spy.

With 10D Dexterity.

Ah... right, 14 dice is for NPCs and templates prior to handing them to the character...

But I better get another fact check. My memory obviously is not superior

Well... what does the 14 really do then? Is it sad and lonely and neglected, of no real importance to the game at all??? That just isn't fair, man... not fair at all...:(

I'm'a say "14 dice for an NPC who is almost cool".
