This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

How would you prefer a new edition of DragonQuest be handled?

Quote from: Just Another Snake Cult;1015653I 'm currently playing in a Dragonquest campaign with some hard-core 80s DQ grognards. I generally like the game and their enthusiasm is contagious BUT I have the strong suspicion that the DQ fanbase considers the cryptic organization, complex math, endless charts, and lack of a unified mechanic to be selling points, not liabilities. It's a very nerdy, very eighties thing.

That's awesome! I had a similar group beg me to run DQ, but the game seriously needs a tune-up, and not everything that is new and innovative is bad. I ran RQ instead. The rare group like yours could run it old school, but i think if you wanted to breathe new life into the game, it could really use some modernization - whatever the hell that means.

Well, at that point I'll just call The Arcane Confabulation the DQTreat system and put some hex grid references and case number the paragraphs.

Really, I always want it to be a little more like Dragon Quest in order to attract those three remaining fans but of course there's really no point in that.

But no, if you want to write your own game do so and let the old game be itself.

It's what people first played their RPGs with is all. Most Traveller players are the same way. They stick with the edition they first learned tabletopping from. Same goes for most smokers. Try getting them to switch brands. It's an OCD thing, really. Some will say it's nostalgia. But it's more of a mind conditioning. See Pavlov's Dog, and routine players.
