Gronan speaks!

Very cool!
Interesting that they couldn't find a picture less recent than one with a 2e Ad&d DM's screen.
It'a kinda fun to hear the 'Old Geezer' talk all giddy as a schoolboy.
We're in the presence of something, that's for sure.:-) (congrats)
Aw, shucks. * scuffs toe in dirt *
Thanks for posting this. Good interview Gronan!
Anyone else here expecting Gronan to suddenly bark out "Tongue My Pee-Hole"?

I do have SOME sense of decorum.
I just don't usually use it.

Yes. I was amazed how well his potty mouth cleaned up. Very cool respectable interview.
So Gary would roll for a wandering monster if he had to repeat a description? That is the best meta game rule ever. I am so stealing that and I don't even roll for wondering monsters that often.
That can't be Gronan. That sounds like a nice, thoughtful middle-aged gentleman. Can't imagine this voice going "tongue my pee-hole".
Congrats, Mike.
Congrats Mike
Congrats!

Because she didn't say dumb shit like "OD&D is the worst rules ever and you're an idiot for liking it!"
God love the BBC - next up, Microwave ovens!
What is the back story to this interview? Did they hear about your impending book? Or someone on the production team a gamer?
Very nice! Congratulations!
Good job! Very interesting to hear!
The Missus, Queen of the Internet, played your interview for the assembled hordes at the T.'s Third Saturday. Twice, actually. Much humor and delight! :D
Who would have thought, all those years ago, that one of us would be interviewed in the far future by Auntie Beeb?
Very nice Glorious General. Congrats!
Shemek

I have no idea! She dropped me an Email out of the clear blue sky. She said she got my name off somebody's blog, but couldn't remember the blog name.
Well done. I liked the photo they chose too, very typical scene of British kids playing D&D circa 1989.

Thumbs Up!
Is "Bucknard" also somehow a pun on the family name?

How much was this edited from what you remember saying? Is there anything cut that you wish was left in?
Dude did you ask her to come play with you? I totally would have asked her.
The interview lasted just a bit over 90 minutes. Yes, she told me it would be cut down that much.

...no?

Gosh! I wonder who could have mentioned you on their blog? Some obscure little blog that people go to for strange and
exotic information, I'll warrant. You do find the oddest things in the dusty corners of the Internet, don't you...
:)
Seriously, I don't know for sure. But I do know that when I babble about something, it later appears in some very far-flung and unexpected quarters.
The plumbing, as I often say, flows downhill. I am downhill.
That was very cool, Mike! :)
So...when's the Kickstarter for your book???
After the manuscript is finished. Best advice I ever got.

Agreed; damn right! :)
Quote from: chirine ba kal;942423Agreed; damn right! :)
I owe Tavis Allston of Autarch Games BIG TIME for that advice.
The truth is, for the last year or 18 months I just haven't been in the mood to work on it, for a variety of reasons. Fortunately, I don't owe anybody anything; if I never DO get in the mood to finish it, it's no skin off anybody's nose.
Thank Crom there isn't a mob of people who paid me money wondering where the Hell their book is.
On the other hand, you'd make Kickstarter history if you just told everyone to Tongue your Peehole.

Where the hell's my book!Oh. Wait a minute. I'm still writing the thing. Let me rephrase it.
Where the hell's your damn book?Seriously, good advice, and good to hold off; if you try to force it, it's going to wind up a disaster. I learned that the hard way with mine, and after I sat back and let it ferment for a while, version 2.0 turned out to be one heck of a better book then version 1.0 ever was.
Take your time; write when your passion moves you, my General!

Absolutely. Its cool to include the backers in the final edit process (free editors!) and their input is good for finding out bits the crowd may enjoy hearing more about. A key value of KS is the interaction with backers FAR beyond the concept of pre-order customers.

THAT has to be a Backer Tier.

Now, now, I only tell somebody to tongue my pee hole if they are stupid, annoying, AND insulting.

If I missed something, then I am terribly sorry, no disrespect.
Thanks so much for sharing.

Didn't think any disrespect was involved, no worries.
I sort of ignored everything produced after 1977 or so, so if I had ever heard of Bucknard I had forgotten, that's all. Hence my confusion.
For all I know Gary may have based it off my name, I have no idea. No info from me, sorry.

Napoleonics people (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv3Y_aJFSh4) all over the globe just felt a disturbance in the francophonie..
Seriously.
"GronYAR" -- French veteran soldier of the Napoleonic period.
"GROGnard" -- Middle aged or older cranky flatulent wargamer.
Ah, the francophone! Usually played by Cacaphonix, as I recall...
I really regret not getting the Metal Magic "Asterix" line...
Sigh...
A new Asterix adventure is coming out soon...
Nice, interview. Yes, you sound like a nice, even normal person, last quote notwithstanding.
I enjoyed hearing her say "nerd" in her BBC accent.
While we are talking names, family and pronounciation:
I was perusing the DMG, and found some of the Artifacts sound like they came out of family life with small children. The recorder of Ye'Cind most obviously. Then, Queen Ahlissa's Marvelous Nightingale, created by some Xagy and the goddess Joramy had me think: Why on earth is Greyhawk the only game I know that has a goddess of Volcanoes and eruptive Anger that is Neutral Good? And why would she cooperate with one of Gary's anagrams to create an expensive and annoying soundmaking toy for one of Gary's kids?
It struck me:
Joramy, that must then be Gary's wife!
And lo and behold: His first wife's name is Mary Jo Gygax.
And if we further look up Joramy's portfolio (https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Joramy), the marriage must have been under pressure then already.
Anyone any insight on that?
It does not show up in the regualar "keys" to Greyhawk anagrams (http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/gh_anagrams.html) and puns, like grodogs. Sorry if everyone was in on the joke since 77. If so, nothing to see here.
The text in the "portfolio" is much later than 1977. The DMG is 1981 or so, for one thing, and even then that material does not appear.
