This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Walking cats and fireballs of doom.

MANY years ago ....... one of the few times I ran a 'fantasy" setting for a game, this is what I came up with :

No damn Elves...

... no damn dwarves.

Its a medieval/Middle Ages type setting where magic is possible and most humans have magic users and even professional magic weavers and wielders that sell their services to whoever pays the best. Its a considered a normal part of life ( Just like someone in our world thinks of musical talent - you usually know somebody who is a musician or gets paid for something related to music)

Besides humans there ais only one other intelligent race that is commmon in the world - the Greymalkind.

The Greymalkind are basically cat like feline creatures that walk upright...kind of like the Aslan in the TRAVELLER universe - just more of the familiar cat like features in their looks.

The Greymalkind have as many different colorings to their fur as modern day domeestic cats do . They also wear clothing, hold down jobs...etc..

I ran two game sessions in that setting .

One involved a vampire onboard a sailing vessel that the player characters were passengers on.

The other dealt with problems of a magical nature near a small town - at the end of the night it escalated into a full blown Wizard war near a mountain keep - while the other characters were fighting undead minions in the nearby maze-like area of ruins of an ancient city.

So, to sum up - I prefer Sci-Fi and modern type action for my RPGS, but I can do Fantasy if someone talks me into it. I just don''t like to do the usual fantasy cliches if I can avoid them.

One player told me that she usually hates Fantasy/Sword & Sorcery type RPG settings - but that she has more fun and is more comfortable when I run a setting of that type.

 Any thoughts??

Anyone ese try breaking out of their comfort zone for particular genres?
