This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Any suggestions on the reasonable cause for Mutations!?

Yes, from a Sci-Fantasy viewpoint.

I have one I feel is reasonable but, would be interested in how well it aligns with what other people would use.

Thanks for your opinions.

In Starship (by Brian Aldiss), the book that inspired Metamorphosis Alpha, which I'm assuming has inspired your game, there was something in the water...literally, which they picked up on an alien world, if I remember correctly (It's been a few years).  I have the book in fromt of me, but can't seem to locate the right passages.

So...what system are you using? ;)..or when you say "game" do you mean an entirely new game, and not just a game campaign?

I intend to start with the Savage Gama World conversion and graft on whatever I need for a spaceship setting.  Back to the Metamorphosis Alpha roots, only with a new take.

I'm also considering cyberware as "mutations" when nanites are involved.
Losing control of nanite genetic manipulation during experiments with future colony habitat preparation should make a good Post Apoc justification.

I've always wanted to re-visit MA with SW.  I'd love to see an actual play thread, or an advegnture developement thread.  Any plans on doing one?

How about just colonists exposed to hazardous chemicals on the ship?

(As an aside, look up a banned drug called thalidomide that was used to calm the fetuses of pregant women back in the 50s, before it was learned that it also caused deadly birth defects.)
"Meh."

Yes
It will not be up to your standards but it will be good enough to follow.
Right now I'm working on ship layout using Dungeon Crafter.
PM / email (djackson24 at earthlink dot net) me and I'll forward / link interesting stuff as they are created.

btw, thx for the interest.  It helps maintain focus.

I don't know if that's a compliment or an insult.

PMing you ;)

Quote from: jrientsIf I needed a plausible cause for mutations I'd probably look a nanotech.  Nannite gene reassemblers with faulty or incomplete programming could be loose on the ship.

Definitely. Nanotech is a wonderfully plausible way of handwaving all kinds of bizarre shit.

Picture a parasitic infestation by a dispersed nanite intelligence, an artifact of personal modification left as a remanant of a culture just on the cusp of tranhumanism. The "plague" responds to subconscious self-image in addition to repeated memes and cultural mores. Even racial memory and half-remembered myth cycles could be a source of "refinement."

Voila! Post-apoc Ogres whom feed on the marrow of their victims!

I have to agree.  There is even the intentional assembly of gene structures from stored digital data as well as the intention alterations, for the original source that malfunctioned.
