This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

wait until SATURDAY?!

Well, I searched the forum for "Mongoose" and "Traveller" in the thread title... so you lose! Ha!

Quote from: RPGPunditYeah, I'm not overly impressed or excited. Its not like Traveller isn't around already, what with it currently existing in TWO versions (GURPS and D20).

GURPS is not Traveller, it's the Third Imperium married to GURPS.  It fails the example set by CT.

T20 is just a fucking mess.  It's closer to the example of CT, but muddied up with intensely labyrinthine rules, and a horribly grafted on set of mechanics.

Classic Traveller to me is good for the same reason that D&D is good:  It's generic, but not overly so.  The implied setting offers enough structure to feed the imagination, but not so much structure as to straight jacket.  It's the perfect combination of openness and definition I look for in a game.

It's also got that lifepath thing going on, something netiher GURPS or T20 really do.

To me, it ain't Traveller without lifepaths.

But as Kyle pointed out above, "based on" leaves a lot of room for disappointment.

The interesting part to me is having a traveller ruleset under the OGL. It probably won't mean a great deal in the long run but at least the creative efforts of all the classic traveller fans will have a better legal foundation to remain. Granted that M. Miller has always been nice about it but there was never a guarantee.

Maybe we will a resurgence of paleo traveller settings instead of all the work being focused on the 3rd Imperium.

beeber

as long as i can still write an entire character on an index card i'll be happy.

i guess my only wish list is crunchy stuff--gear lists for different TLs, comprehensive alien books, more starships of varied TLs with of course deckplans.

and GUNS.  moremoremore GUNS

This is precisely why I'm excited about this: to my mind, Traveller always had a lot of potential as a multi-setting SF system (especially if you just take the core character rules and tinker with the assumptions of the spaceship rules), which was never really exploited since GDW focused on the Imperium (and GURPS and T20, of course, could only adapt the setting, not the system). Seeing Traveller applied to different settings can only be healthy, in my opinion.

Here's hoping for a Traveller renaissance.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

I so totally agree with this that it's not even funny.

Traveller is very much a system thing to me, with a bit of an implied setting, at least, that's how it's presented in the original CT corebook.

The Third Imperium stuff is alright, but it's really not what Trav is about to me.

WHAT?!  omg, etc.
one of the fun things about traveller (the setting) is following all the history.  Imperial vs. IRL truly competed for my personal memory back in my undergrad days.

i'm sure you've seen the basics:

find and era you like and go from there!  a great sandbox, i've found it to be.

Thanx beeeber, but I don't even know the basics.

Yup.

I never got into Traveller as a kid (it just wasn't available in my area).  So, feeling like I was missing out on something classic, I started looking into the game.  But I was initially intimidated by the vast and detailed game world, so I decided to drop the idea.

It wasn't until I picked up the Classic Traveller books that I realised... hey, there aint no setting here!
