This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

alternate rules ideas for Risus

I'm gonna be using said game for a dresden files rpg.  BUT...Risus is a kind of one shot / comedic game, which isn't what I want.

Basically the game will remain the same but the inappropriate cliche rule is out.
Instead damage is based upon the cliche used (so Viking 4 does 4 damage).  Innapropriate cliches can be used but do 1 damage maximum, 'silly' uses are disallowed (so in the pumping rules example, rudolph the ninja would have got eaten for trying to cook).

Gadgets and tools I'll go with a Wushu approach and let the pc's have what they want.  I'm not gonna bother limiting their cliches because their stuff gets nicked/broken - I might bump the difficulties up instead.

I recently re-tooled Risus for a serious-ish campaign (see Cyrisus in the Free Games section of my site). I planned on dumping the Inappropriate Cliche rule, as well (but with the When Somebody Can't Partcipate Rule, it's arguably unnecessary, anyhow).

I also use a heavily organized list of cliches, though for your purposes a Nationality/Profession breakdown may be more appropriate (I used this breakdown to great effect in a Risus Cthulhu campaign several years ago). I also introduce the idea of Quest Cliches (i.e., cliches that can be obtained by obtaining story goals or performing certain acts in-game).

Risus is far more versatile than people give it credit for. Incidentally, are you the guy with the small collection of Risus monsters and a map of the Underworld on your home page? If so, that's great stuff.

I'm not (don't have a webpage anymore) but I'll take the compliment in the spirit it was given in the hope of driving the great karmic wheel. :)
