This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The convention info has been updated.  The OSR award show, held each year at VENGER CON, will be called The Tentacular!  I'll be asking for volunteer judges and submissions at some point next Spring.  I'm thinking each celebration of The Tentacular will be for OSR products released between the last convention and the current one.

While I still have pondering to do (mostly, the exact wording), I want these awards to reflect the VS aesthetic.  So, plain Jane, super-crunchy, card based RPG supplements and similar fare won't even be recognized.
You'll probably want to start by nailing down how your awards will define what is/isn't OSR since that's often ambiguous.

Just like the convention, I think the Tentacular Awards should be old-school, OSR, and traditional.  If I was just going by OSR, I'd probably say anything after 1992 would be out, and not just D&D mechanics.

May I suggest staying with OSR = D&D up until 1982 and the OTHER old Scholl gets it's own category OSG.

I don't think that's a good idea. We had Traveller before 1982, and it has clones. The original Role Master (two words, IIRC) came out before 1982 too. Villians & Vigillantes was before 1980. Hero System/Champions started in 1981. I'm sure others here have many more examples. I'd rather not see any awards limited to only D&D-based DNA.

Then don't call it the OSR awards, call it the OSG awards (Old School Gaming for those out of the loop).

Why? Why the need to put D&D derived works on a pedestal of theor own?

Why not?

I'd bet that D&D has sold more RPGs than all of their competitors combined.  And it has certainly had a far greater impact on the hobby than any other RPG or even group of RPGs.  Why shouldn't its derivative get their own category?

Maybe we can get closer to the same page if I shared my expectations with y'all...

So, let's say I get 50 attendees (I'd be happy with that) and 5 products entered into The Tentacular (VENGER CON awards for OSR products).  Instead of worrying if a particular product is OSR or traditional or old-school, the judges can evaluate all 5 products and determine the winner, 2nd place, and 3rd place.  Done.

Just like the convention itself, I don't intend for the award show to be this vast mecca of international gaming, uniting all old-school roleplayers together.  50 people, half a dozen products, that's enough for me.

Let those that bring the products judge the products? Sounds good to me. If you somehow attract writers that publish very non-traditional stuff, they can still throw it in and see how everyone feels about it, yes?
