Referenced from another forum, I just did a quick write up with pictures on WolfhillEntertainment (Facebook) about how to use Photoshop to create a "fog of war" by blending two images together. This system allows the Game Master to uncover specific areas of the map as the players move around the environment. I use a big screen TV in my gaming sessions to jump between pictures, music, and an Excel monster hit/damage generator so this fits in nicely for me. I still use hand drawn combat maps for battles but dungeon scales work really well on the overall map. The best thing is that it requires no internet connection, and you can use whatever images you wish.

Nothing new to this... we've played that way from time to time for at least the last decade.
One of these days we'll even find enough space to set up the dream of a projector above a whiteboard gaming table (4x8 foot masonite sheet is all of $13 at Home Depot... finding enough room for a 4x8 foot table amidst this thing called "life" is the tricky part).
That said, sometimes it's also nice to just turn off all the tech and run either an oldschool theater of the mind or "here be hordes of minis" evenings. Tech can get in the way if you try to make it the focus of the game instead of just a tool to facilitate the game.
Theater of the mind and minis on a mat never crash-out because Windows 10 has decided NOW is the time to do an update it won't let you pause or delay and because Win10 is malware incarnate takes 40 minutes to restart afterwards (Yes, this actually happened to us once because apparently only the Win10 Professional Edition lets you turn off automatic updates... You'll have to pry Win7 from my cold dead hands).
