This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[any D&D] Race to terrain connections: how would you complete this list?

Drawing from D&D's history, if you had to choose one emblematic race to represent each terrain type, what would you pick and why?

Dwarf --> Mountains
Elf --> Forests
Halfling --> ?
Human --> any and all? Plains?
? --> Desert
? --> Underdark
? --> Frozen lands
? --> Seas and rivers
? --> Swamps

You would want different races for this to work.
Cat people for the plains
Lizardmen for swamps
Merfolk for seas and rivers
Yeti for frozen lands
Aren't dwarves underdark maybe an orc
No longer living in Singapore

Dwarf --> Mountains
Elf --> Forests
Halfling --> Plains
Gnomes --> Foothills
Dragonborn --> Desert (on the basis that their 4e culture came off as sort of pseudo-Persian, and I think a fanmade version I once saw for C&C was also desert-based. My other choice would be goblins, not sure why but it feels right.)
Drow or Mind Flayers --> Underdark
Orcs --> Frozen lands
Humans --> Seas and rivers (well, the surface/shore at least)
Lizardfolk --> Swamps

I always think of Orcs as desert people. Don't know where I got that from.

Just make your fuckin\' guy and roll the dice, you pricks. Focus on what\'s interesting, not what gives you the biggest randomly generated virtual penis.  -- J Arcane

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Halflings would likely live in slightly hilled areas, like the Ozarks.

Gnomes would be in the smaller mountains, like say the Appalachians.

Dwarf --> Mineral rich regions suitable for mining, (so  mines:)).
Elf --> Elven woods; natural looking but environmentally engineered forest.
Hobbits --> Bucolic hills
Halflings --> Cities (they remind me of Borribles).
Human --> River valleys and coasts (boats and ships are their special thing).
Thri-kreen  --> Desert
Gnomes and Drow --> Underdark
nothing specific --> Frozen lands
Lizardmen  --> Swamps
Centaurs --> plains/steppes/savannas

RPGPundit

Orcs are Badlands, more than just 'desert'.

And for humans it should be CITIES.  And "settled places". Our defining characteristic is that we take control of our environment and radically reshape it to fit our interests and priorities. We don't do "nature".
