This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Uncommon weapons you want in your games

Quote from: Antiquation!;1088183That's cool as shit! Can't believe I haven't seen one of these before!

One of my favorites...I homebrewed some 5e stats for my Primeval Thule campaign.

Kpinga/Mambele/Hunga-Munga

Dam  1d6 P
Thrown (r 10/30), special*
Weight = 3#
Cost = 4 GP

* Because of the shape and multiple points, this Lomari throwing knife/axe will catch and hook over shields.  A proficient wielder ignores the target's shield bonus to AC.

"Government is the only entity that relies on its failures to justify the expansion of its powers." -- David Freiheit (Viva Frei)

Mordred Pendragon

Katanas, especially in World of Darkness games.

I unironically think they are cool and the fact that Goths and Punks tend to have a highly irrational hatred of them make me love them even more.

I'm fond of the odd neolithic throwing weapon like a bolas or darts and atlatl.

Spears. Common in history and probably in the setting, but rare in the hands of PCs.
Currently running: Tyche\'s Favourites, a historical ACKS campaign set around Massalia in 300BC.

Shields. They weren't just for passive defense.

Also the Bola, Lasso and other primitive weapons designed as much or more for snaring than damaging.

Quote from: tenbones;1088180I've always wanted to use one of those African throwing blades - the ones that look like flattened antlers right? They looks awesome!

Edit: Here you go
Amazing!

Yep, looked something like that.

I went to a Battle of Bosworth Field reenactment and there was a huge bloke using an Irish Flail, basically a wrecking ball on a 10 foot chain. When he got going it was awesome, but you were waiting for someone to do a really good parry to stop it and then everyone jumped him, which is what happened.

While possibly not real. The Tathlum from the AD&D Deities & Demigods book allways interested me. Especially when we ended up making one from a fallen druid party member's head.

Well 1st and foremost I have a thing for chain whips.

Heres a clip to give you a peek at what they can do.

One of the more unique is the Kusari-fundo I have only ever seen these once in anything one ps2 game thats it as far as I know.

It's pretty rare from what ive seen for any one to use a war mallet.

The Japanese also made big 2 handed flails some times I can't find any pictures though.

Depends heavily on the group in my experience.

Agreed. Spears saw alot of use with the various groups Ive played with or DMed. Some of my characters use them too.

Quote from: Michele;1088176With GURPS, melee weapons all fall in broad categories defined by generic terms. For a weapon to be truly different, it would need to have some special game mechanics. These might easily be secondary, and amount to a specialization with an advantage - but also some drawback.

The unusual weapons I usually want to see handled well are flexible weapons; entangling, generating substantially greater force in the right circumstances, but requiring unusual levels of skill and having some drawbacks. It's disappointing when a game classifies weapons in a very small number of categories without leaving room for mechanically distinct weapons.

Weapons chosen entirely for appearance and role-playing are always cool, though; one bard in our games used a sackbut to beat on enemies, claiming that the sound of the battered instrument reflected the sum of all her combats, with every adventure changing its musical qualities.

In one of my Dark Albion campaigns I had one player (the same guy who later ran Bill the Elf) who was obsessed with using a Mancatcher whenever possible. He just thought it was hilarious.

Had one PC hire a bunch of 0-level commoners to be back rank spear wielders. With my rules that let them pack spear wielders tight they were really effective from the back rank so other PCs took a hint from that.

Had one of those players too after they had one used on them by Kua-toa and then they liberated one from the fishmen and used it thereafter.

The mancatcher is a running thing in my games. I'm convinced I can make it work.
