Title: Trying to cram weird metaphysics into 5e as a joke.
Post by: MeganovaStella on July 07, 2022, 05:29:15 AM
so, i want to run a 5e joke campaign. What about it is a joke, you say?

I have an entire set of metaphysics i made over the span of 2/3 years. it was not designed for any RPG in mind and is in fact made for a novel series I plan to write. I know it's incompatible with 5e. I want to try anyway just to see how WOTC's system groans under the pressure of trying to handle what is essentially the oil to its water. problem is I don't know much about 5e and I need some help. How would I go about reflecting my metaphysics in 5e mechanics?

I started to read your link, but I lost interest in it pretty quickly. Sorry.

However, D&D5e seems to be all about adding in things that were never intended to be a part of it (like the MtG settings). Most of that is crap and annoying to any that like game worlds to be internally consistent, but if you're going for a joke, this shouldn't matter.

That said, the idea that the whole game universe is a computer sim is beyond easy since the universe is running with the 5e OS. For more fun, have 'glitches' in the system where things still operate with earlier versions of the program (i.e., earlier D&D rules).

If your players like such things, have fun, but I don't generally put too much effort into joke settings because player interest tends to wane quickly, but your experiences may vary. Good luck.

It's fine to lose interest, I tend to ramble on. And thank you.

I don't think that you need 5E but, more appropriately, the Planescape setting for AD&D 2E. In Planescape (which can be used to represents all known cosmogonies) ideas and beliefs are stronger than rules. For example, there is a full chapter about different ideas on what the Gods actually are (including mere expressions of the collective unconscious or, as an alternative, "normal" beings with just superpowerful stats/levels) - and no idea is right or wrong. Try the base "box" and see if you like the milieu.

Why do you think it will struggle?

A good chunk of how things work in my world are counter to 5e design values. Bounded accuracy is incompatible with a world where stronger opponents can defeat literally infinite amounts of weaker opponents at once. Solid 'A spell only does what it says' is incompatible with freeform weaving of spells with Spheres. The idea of saves itself is incompatible with Protection/Negation. And so on and so forth.

Also Exarchs/Daevas as a whole are incompatible with classes.

Trying to cram weird metaphysics into D&D 5e.

Would explain many of the odd design choices therein?

are you implying that the guys who made dnd 5e did drugs and made up bizarre fictional worlds to try to break 5e and make it more universal?
