This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Blood! is coming in time for Halloween, the revised second edition of the 1990 British horror RPG by Underground Games (Norley Tucker, Steve Osborn et al).

Blood is a game of 'splatterpunk' horror where players take on the part of ordinary people thrust into horrific and terrifying situations.  The first book in the series is the core rulebook and contains...

  • Advice on playing Blood!
  • Full character creation and advancement rules
  • Full combat and skill rules
  • A small bestiary of foes from the original edition
  • Adventure seeds to get you started
  • Rules for more than 400 weapons from the conventional to powertools, garden implements and improvised household items.
  • Grotesque and stomach churning critical hit tables for every type of weapon
  • A stunning cover by Gavin Hargest and interior art by Brad McDevitt, Darkzel and Paul Campion

Plans for follow-on material include the long awaited Hell On Earth medieval vision of Blood! and Star Shock, SF horror using the same rules set. Other material will include a full bestiary of foes 'Psycho Freaks' for more human opponents and numerous horror scenarios dual or tri-statted for use with other popular game engines.

Blood! uses a gritty, 'crunchy' percentile based system with resource management and deadly combat emphasised to create a true sense of risk and survival.

Blood! will be published in PDD/POD at the end of October with a print version following for Dragonmeet in December.

Somehow, this does not appeal to me.  Maybe its because the title and cover illo basically screams "slasher pic" at me; and really I always find any kind of horror that depends upon seeing a lot of blood to be pretty damn unhorrific.

As Grim said, it's spatterpunk. The cover looks spot on in that case! :D

Damn, this game would be perfect for the campaign I'm running at the moment using the Hunter rules. Looks very interesting.

Well I'm very glad to get a positive reply here on this.
I've encountered my first genuine Pundit-styled Swine elsewhere who thinks horror games should only be narrative. (Where's the bloody tension if you know how things are going to turn out eh?).

Blood! is a labour of love for me, I picked it up at Esdevium Games around... '90, '92 and despite it being very crunchy and poorly explained we had an absolute blast with it playing splatterpunk and survival horror games mostly.

We used to play by firelight in the woods of an abandoned old railway track which really set the mood while the crunchy brutality of the rules really did lend itself to horror, mutilation and random, horrible violence.

I finally secured the rights to it and I've cleaned it up a bit, shifted some of the rules emphasis and streamlined a little while retaining what made the game great.

Rules-wise it is unashamedly 'old skool' and falls somewhere around Call of Cthulu with just a pinch of rolemaster in terms of complexity.  The plan is to actually develop this line a little, hoping - perhaps vainly - that it'll do reasonably well.

If anyone has any specific questions, feel free to fire 'em up and fling 'em my way.

Could you give a few more details on the foes from the bestiary? I want to get a feel of the kinds of splatterpunk games I can run with this.

How many pages of crit tables?

And does the weapon list contain a belt sander? ;)

The basic game book will come with material for...

Angels of Pain (Cenobites)
Candarion Demons (Evil Dead)
Giant Insects (You name it really...)
Psychopaths (Some basic rules for creating psychos and freaky hillbillies and some samples)
The Blob (self explanatory)
The Seldom Seen (Gremlins/Catseye little folk)
Vampire Brains (No, really)
Vampires (Of a more bestial kind)
Zombies (Fast and slow)

I'll be looking for help in coming up with a more exhaustive list for the foe book.

Layout isn't QUITE finalised yet so there may be a couple of extras tucked in there.

I can't be sure until the layout is finalised (some things might not make the cut) but the original had 13 pages of critical hit tables.

Belt Sander (Small)
Type: Melee, Damage 1d10, Actions 2, Skill +10%, Blood: Crush, Crit: Powertool 2.

Belt Sander (Medium)
Type: Melee, Damage 2d6, Actions 3, Skill +5%, Blood: Crush, Crit: Powertool 2.

Belt Sander (Large)
Type: Melee, Damage 2d6+4, Actions 3, Skill +0%, Blood: Crush, Crit: Powertool 2.

Yo, Grim - I just dropped you a PM regarding this title. As I'm a bigtime horror hound and horror gamer from way back in the day, I'd LOVE to write a review on this title I'm currently working on a supers review and another very special product (wink wink) but I would love to have BLOOD cued up and ready for review.

You were talking about the Narrativist-only in horror swine...well, there's something that they would all rather forget about called "Nightlife," a horror rpg from Stellar Games. It billed itself as a splatterpunk horror game where players could play vampires, werewolves, animates, ghosts and mages (among other critters) and have kick-ass adventures in New York.
I can't remember the name of the guy who wrote it, but believe you me, he is very much aware that White Wolf and company bit off his idea and ran with it.

While White Wolf enjoyed a success only rivaled by D&D, Nightlife sunk deeply into obscurity. Of course, thanks to eBay, I have very nearly the entire product line in my collection.

Anyway, thanks for bringing the bite back to horror!

I have Nightlife, played it, loved it, despite some system issues.
Brad McDevitt worked on Nightlife and did quite a bit of the art for it, he does work for me fairly often and he's done a few pieces of work for Blood.
