This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I'm almost a little surprised that WotC havent done the D20 treatment to Start Fontiers. I know they have some of the races stated in the future book and etc. But do they not own the setting as a whole? Do they figure they have Star Wars so screw Star Frontiers? Do they veiw it as a possible competitor for Star Wars? Do they think there would be little interest? Personally I dont really care for D20. (I'd really like them to just republish the original. Updated like the Star Frontiers Man) But I'm surprised it hasnt been done.

They do own the setting. They also probably felt that there wouldn't be enough interest to make Star Frontiers worth it.  I mean shit, if Mystara, which was much more popular and a D&D setting to boot, is not worth publishing; or Dark Sun, etc., then obviously Star Frontiers wouldn't be more than a blip for them.

From what I can tell WotC isn't really into making MORE setting books and adventures.  They licensed DRAGONLANCE to someone else for awhile. And I think DARK SUN got a few update articles in DRAGon and DUNGEON magazine last year.

Here's a thought : Those of you that have the old STAR FRONTIERS boxed set  - How about converting it to D20 on your own and posting the results to this forum.

I may not play D20 - but i'd love to read what someone comes up with. *
I used to own that game....think I sold it to a used book store over 12 years ago. Always loved the map that came with that boxed core set.

* Tho I'd rather see a GURPS conversion, but thats obvious if you know me by now.

Converting Star Frontiers to d20 is heresy, plain and simple.

I figure if they were going to do a D20 version (which I doubt they will) they wouldn't have allowed the old books to be downloadable for free at the site you link in your site.

Yeah I think your right.

I couldnt agree more. But D20 would introduce new gamers to what I think is an awesome game and setting.

It may be heresy but honestly I'd give it a try :D

Elements of Star Frontiers - at least some of the races, I believe - appear in d20 Future, IIRC. If so, then WotC essentially did do a d20 version, since d20 Future pretty much covers most generic scifi tropes, and Star Frontiers was, beyond specific races, pretty much bog standard scifi (not a knock on it, just a statement).

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

While it was a little generic. There was more to it than that. It has a timeline and history. Not to mention specific star systems laid out. I mean it was left intentinally vague in parts. But thats for the GM and player to fill in. I guess I think it just deserves better than a passing mention.

First, sorry to repeat some of what you said in your original post. I was trying to emphasize that stuff and lost track of my main point. If what you want is a specific Star Frontiers d20 game book made by WotC, then yeah, I think what you mention above is right - WotC has the 800 lb. gorilla of scifi settings, and likely sees no need for another, or the need to compete with itself. They seem to have made some concessions to both Star Frontiers and Alternity/Star*Drive fans by giving out some d20 versions of elements of both settings. Likely this was under the assumption that 1) fans of those settings already had the fluff material that distinguishes them and 2) those who don't have that material can use the elements of those settings for their own homebrews, using the fairly sketchy fluff material in d20 Future as a jumping-off point.

Ehh.  I think they just got lazy and figured it'd be easier to reprint crap from older books than come up with anything new.  There's a lot of recycled material and half-assed conversions of old books in the D20m material.

I mean hell, they even threw in stuff from Amazing Engine . . .
