This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Wasn't there a cadre of genetically adept that were chosen? It couldn't just be anyone who could take the spice and be a navigator, right?

Anyway the computers were not there because they were banished by law. At least the really smart ones were.

What was the name of that Hercules in space thingy? With the ren fair rasta?

That's a pretty cool setting decision too, and its repercussions would be very deep.  Grabbing these themes away from Dune and all its baggage might be a nifty exercise!

Andromeda or something like that, I think.

Okay, to get back on topic: From a Hard SF point of view, it would be quite hard to find something about the human brain that could not be replicated with a sufficiently able computer -- without entering the supernatural. So if the FTL drive is totally understood, human-only navigation seems a bit far-fedged.

Then again, there is a lot of precedence for settings where the FTL was a chance discovery or taken from a higher civilisation. In this context, "whe don't know why but we have no other solution" seems believable.

This kinda reminds me of the multitude of ways that have been used to find excuses for swords in space...

My fave is "Space marines are so badass they will kill you with a cutlass or six-gun just 'cause they can."

Every time you pull the trigger on that fusion gun there's a fucking MOUNTAIN of paperwork, but any given incident with a cutlass can be explained as a kitchen accident.

Swords don't run out of ammo (or power, as the case may be).

Which is true today, too. I still don't believe that marines are bringing their dress sabres into Falluja...

The Dune explanation with the shields was kinda neat, though easily circumvented.

Swords are also less likely to puncture through ship hulls. This is the same reason why shotguns are in such common use on naval ships, buckshot is lethal in great number to a person, but the individual pellets do nothing to ships walls.

Mind, Star Wars' lightsabers botch that theory all up by going and making them the most powerful weapons in the universe ...

Yeah, well if it were my army, they'd be trained to fight with their teeth and fire-hardened fingernails.  Sissies.
