This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

i'm planning on running megatraveller soon, with the premise that the players are all crew on a 400 ton gunned escort.  the total crew is 10, 4 of which are officers.  with 5 players, some will turn out enlisted, some officer.  but the thing that has me wondering, will the players be able to stay with the imperial navy?  or will they end up privateering, and just take off?

what has been the experience of others in this regard?  would they just "steal" the ship, or stick with being proper navy folks?

Consider 2 things:
  • Are they the type players to do one or the other?
  • For which of the outcomes are you prepared?

1.  when they were younger, i'd put money on them just running with the ship, and doing their own thing.  now, with some of the wilder members of the group gone, it's quite possible that they stick around and follow orders.  i'm interested in what they actually do!  :raise:

2.  i have few "introductory scenarios" planned.  i'll make notes for either outcome before actually starting.

since we'll be in the spinward marches (the ole stompin' grounds) there's plenty of ways they can go.  i also have to figure when to do it--i'd like to have it lead into the fifth frontier war if i can, and see what kind of adventures come of that.

If they stick around, pirates and espionage and boarding actions galore!

If they go AWOL, the Navy will be very displeased.

did a little background huntin', and i'll definitely do the FFW thing.  so if they do go AWOL, they'll have a little leeway.  things will get too crazy for the IN to go chasing one 400 ton escort.  but if they turn up in a system with a heavy navy presence, or in a contested area / battleground, things will get pretty hairy for our crew :D

if they do stay, i want to try a mundane cargo inspection.  see if they get all paranoid and take the ship apart, looking for phantom contraband or something :keke:
