This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

How tight has your criteria become?

Quote from: Consonant DudeHere's my sincere recommendation: design a game, again.

I'm tossing around the idea right now.  I'm thinking of taking the fantasy games and setting I've done and combine, revise, and expand them into one game.

It'll probably only be shared with a hanfull of people...but who knows, after I di ;)....

In any case, it'll give me something to ocupy my idle time when I go on (a much needed) vacation in a week.

For an instant scenario, have someone steal the veil: can the PCs recover it before the otherwise inevitable ELE wipes out the human species?

So atheists have been abused, treated badly by clergy or they\'re stupid.They\'re just being trendy because they can\'t understand The God Delusion because they don\'t have the education, plus they\'re just pretending to be atheists anyway. Pundit you\'re the one with a problem, terminal stupidity.

My main criterion in the last few years has become "Sooo, why should I play this instead of D&D?" Because let's face it, old school D&D gives me everything I really want from gaming. I don't need more. Sure, I realise the genius in Traveller, like the various BRP games, and occasionally have fun reading newer RPGs, even a few that come from the Forge. But play, that's all about the Real Thing, or "proper" D&D. Granted, I have molded D&D to my tastes with a little help from my good friend Castles&Crusades, and now I'm just enjoying myself. Life is good.

Apart from the mythic undertones, you could even run it as just another MacGuffin hunt: you have three days in which to find the artifact, or the world ends... But there's no arguing about taste and all that, which is pretty much the point of this thread.

Yes indeed, I was delighted to see Marion, the man who though he probably doesn't realise it some years ago made me realise D&D wasn't the pile of crap I then thought it was.

And of course I am now currently playing in a D&D game and enjoying it.  There we go.

Good to see him again, great poster.

Melan, Balbinus,

Thanks for the welcome,

I've never really been gone. As a matter of fact, I've been following this forum since Pundit started it. I think I even posted when it was still the squirrels' place. I'm just not that prolific a poster anymore. Even before I got kicked out of the purple site I was only posting once or twice a week on average.

Now that you mention it, I seem to remember that I had gotten pretty good at selling D&D's best qualities :D. I'm glad you discovered a game you like. Although my aim has always been more to set the record straight on D&D than getting people to like it.

Speaking of D&D (and to get back on thread's suubject), I'd have to say that it has become somewhat of a benchmark for me. Nowadays, I want games that are at least as organised, as clear and as consistent as D&D. I'm not holding out D&D as some sort of paragon of RPGs, but it is about as user-friendly as a game of that complexity can be and the books are always very consistent in all regards - art, mechanics, organisation, writing, etc.

For example, GURPS, HERO, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and Mutants & Masterminds all meet my criteria, despite their very differing production values.

I definitely have become less interested in 'rules heavy' games.  I just can't be bothered anymore.  Likewise, if a game involves too much work to prep, it's not for me (this is one of my main complaints against D&D 3e).

So these days I look to see whether a game is 'rules medium' or lighter.  This is why I tend to prefer stuff like C&C, Unisystem Cinematic, True20, etc.

(The one exception would be my abiding fondness for Rolemaster 2e/Classic, but I remember most of the rules from playing it for years in my youth, and I own tonnes of old RM/MERP stuff, so if I ever ran it again I'd just adapt old published materials.)
