This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Traveller 5

Rumour has it that they'll put out a .pdf in June and get feedback to make sure the core books are as close to error free as is humanly possible.  That's a good thing I'm thinking.  On the other hand, the whole "Life Pursuit" thing frightens me a bit.  I want a game with just stats and skills thanks.

Some whisper that it'll never turn up.  Others say it's going to be crap.  But you know, between GURPS (not much like) Traveller, and d20 (not much like) Traveller, and Mega Minis, and Ad Astra's fleet minis, I think there's more of a Traveller community out there than there has been in years.

I'm trying not to get excited.  When they killed Imperium Games and T4 I promised myself that I wouldn't let them suck me in and ass rape me again.  So feed me bad rumours.  Tell me about dice pools and half dice and Larry Elmore artwork.

Because damn it, I just spent my first $16 on Traveller stuff in over ten years and I don't think I'm in control of the urge any more.

You know I only picked up T4 ( ..... ) because I found a copy signed by Larry Elmore, Miller and all, but the total lack of thought, and skill it took to write that crap has made me more than alittle cautious about the idea of some of the same people (I'm looking right at you Miller) doing anothe edition,

I'd like to be surprised (in a good way this time) But I sorta doubt it

I've actually got a couple inside tracks on T5.  I haven't seen the latest draft, but at this point I'm pretty confident that anything released as early as June this year will be a complete and utter trainwreck.  I don't like being so cryptic, because it is unfair to all party's involved and it puts me in the position of having only my online reputation (hah!) as any support for my assertions.  I wish I could be more specific, but I can't.

T5 will be an evolution of T4. But no half-dice.

Why I've I got the feeling you are being vague about something.....something I just can't put my finger on...

I can't believe that they did the half dice thing,

but then the numbers involed are a pain in the arss,
not easy to mesh stat+skill in this game,

but I did find away to do it, and I'm guessing it's better than what they have planned, (I'm sorry to say)

i'm a traveller junkie too.  well, except for TNE.

where do i go to sign up for that pdf?  trainwreck or no, i'd like to see where they're going on T5.

guess i could just go to CotI and check there as well. . . .

I'm still holding off on the playtest. I'm just... scared.

It's like an ex-girlfriend. You want to remember her in a good light, not meet the husk she has turned into after 25 years in suburban soccer mom hell.

Frankly, I'm disappointed they stuck with dice pools at all. The removal of the half-dice was a step in the right direction, but I have a hard time thinking of any dice pool system as better than they already had in MT.

I don't know...Marc's very much a numbers and statistics kind of guy.  I really suspect that he won't make the same mistakes as he did with T4.  Whether he hits the brilliant button again I cannot say.

But inspite of the massive contribution of the brothers Keith I can't help but think that the fundamental set-up of Traveller was always Marc Miller.

The Keiths only ever did adventures, I think. (Well that, and write like every single JTAS article ever published under half a dozen pseudonyms.)

Marc is definitely Mr. Traveller. However. MT's task res is the brainchild of DGP. That's a really major contribution, and I think Marc's quandary since has been to come up with something--anything--different.

It's like Gygax is still at the helm doing D&D4, but it drives him crazy that the Blumes invented Armor Class, so in the past two editions he's been experimenting with soaking damage, but the fans hate it.

Technically, development of the rules themselves have been allowed to continue, just not under the Traveller umbrella, using the Traveller universe.
