Traditional Fantasy Modules

Are there any modules out there that are just traditional fantasy where a group of adventurers go on an adventure/trek to fight a dragon or necromancer type bad guy, while doing smaller quests along the way?  I see some dragon based modules but none that are like the hobbit or dragonslayer (movie). Surely there's one out there ....

Do you know of any?  Alternatively, what's your favorite vanilla module?

Plenty..  scroll through tenfootpole's The Best list of reviews and you will find something.

I'd recommend BFRPG. Their modules are free and decent, except that they are very vanilla (which seems to be what you're looking for).

Morgansfort is often recommended as a good start (I've tried it, the adventures are as described above).

I think Morgansfort (and other modules by Gonnerman) have massively excessive numbers of enemies for the listed PC levels. My favourite 'classic fantasy' BFRPG adventure is Fortress of the Iron Duke in Fortress Tower & Tomb, a sex-swapped B3 Palace of the Silver Princess. I also like Monkey Isle, a superior Isle of Dread expy by JS Neal.

Fortress Tower & Tomb is great advice... it also contains actual dragons!

Would the AD&D G1 through Q1 series count? The players start out traveling around thwarting a giant invasion of the land, and then go underground and ultimately face off with a demon god.

On the same note, The City of Brass which was recently recommended to me on another thread runs on a similar format. Starts with the players investigating disappearances in a small town, then to a large city, and finally to the Elemental Plane of Fire for a showdown with an Efreet king.

From what I've heard, the original run of Dragonlance modules were intentionally patterned on LOTR (and of course dragons feature heavily), but these days most people probably know the plot, so they might not be worth using anymore.

This may or may not be helpful, but if I had to guess, I would expect that kind of thing to have been popular in tehe 2nd and 3rd edition eras. That seems to have been a peak for Tolkien-esque epic journeys in D&D.

Anyway, if you find something, I'd like to hear about it. I've been on a bit of a The Hobbit kick lately, and I'd love finding an adventure that replicates that kind of adventure.
Playing: Mongoose Traveller 2e
Running: Dolmenwood
Planning: Warlock!, Savage Worlds (Lankhmar and Flash Gordon), Kogarashi

Thanks!  I'll look into these. Also, I'll let you know what else I find. Worst case scenario, I'll make one myself. If I do, I'll self publish it because it seems to hard to find a more traditional fantasy adventure. I hope I'm able to find something though.

Against the Darkmaster RPG - https://www.vsdarkmaster.com/

For classic high fantasy in D&D there's Saga of the Shadow Lord https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/17123/X11-Saga-of-the-Shadow-Lord-Basic?affiliate_id=384230&; - you could lose the framing device where the PCs are recruited in Thyatis and just start them as natives of Wendar resisting the Shadow Lord invasion.

I have Against the Darkmaster. I like the theme, but it seems really complicated.

I just ordered Saga of the Shadowlord. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah I'm willing to admit that Against the Darkmaster gives me a headache. If you want something on that same tone but quite a bit simpler, you might have a look at The Hero's Journey. It's a Swords and Wizardry hack designed particularly for that retro Tolkien/Lewis/Alexander feel.

I really like "The Black Wyrm of Brandonsville" for low level characters.  Very fairy tale-like and easy to run.
