It was my thing, actually, and it was for all indie RPGs - not just those produced in 2006.  The goal was to share a lot of cool games with folk and see how RPG.net's perceptions changed over time.  Sorry to hear you didn't like it.

Well RPG.net despite its name is very small, very specific group of early adopters--constantly looking for the next new things---if we did "of all time" Tunnels and Trolls and Original D&D should win*...if we accurately assessed any groups outside of Rpg.net  (after all they were when published "Indie")

The problem is a lack of perspective--for the most part your lists only cover the new games, but if we do NEW games, we really should do 'this year'.

How many threads will there be about SOTC or Dread Next year? As new games supplant the old?

RPG.net is a gateway site for folk who are interested in RPGs generally.  ENWorld is the other major gateway, specifically for d20 players.  More specialized sites for indie games, such as the Forge, StoryGames, and GameCraft exist for the specialists.

The goal of the thread was to generate interest in small press games - especially for folk who are looking for such a game.  It's not some sort of perfect analysis of the history of RPGs - just a list of small press games that folk really like right now.  I think it turned on some folk to games they hadn't heard of before, and that makes me feel like it was a success.

It does kinda suck to pop over here for some RPG chat and see something I put time into be cracked on since it wasn't cool enough.  I hope your thread turns out cool, and not wanky and shitty like my efforts.

 The problem is RPGnet's* bias is decidedly "new, different." its not really established in the actual cement foundation of what most gamers play. (Enworld is closer). It wasn't a bad idea. It was just not the best place for it especially not without ground rules.  

I'm asking here for a specific (and different) purpose. More "recent cool things" by a site without so much Forgie influence. My results will be biased, but less wild than yours. (and there is a difference between "TOP" and "favorite" that I take issue with--not the fact that you chose to do such a poll)

Then I started talking to local gamers about "what RPG sites do you visit" and asked them when they goto meetings across state (conventions, Larps, etc) to ask people there--most of them only goto forums devoted to the game companies.  (Hero, White Wolf, and WOTC).  The opinion of RPGnet is "Oh? I went there once." (Still self selecting sample and biased data, but it was eyeopening)

I know this is different.  I took issue with you crapping over my efforts - something I'm not and would not do with yours here.  I'm sorry for disrupting this thread, in fact, and if you'd like to discuss this some more you can PM or email me.

How the fuck would one qualify "top" or "indie"? I mean, if top selling was the key, and indie meant "creator-owned", then all three of the best finalists would probably be GURPS products, or Palladium.

If the definitions were something else, well, small-press games as a whole are largely so irrelevant that I really don't see how anyone could quantify the "best" other than by utterly subjective personal tastes; which is, I think, the real point of the whole endeavour.

Now, next year will be a different story. "Forward... to Adventure!" will without a doubt be the best new game of 2007 by far. :pundit:

That's the point, collective opinion is little more that the sum of individual subjective opions.  What's your opinion on best this year?

It was a small buying year for me.  The only one I can nominate is Spirit of the Century, which is really sweet.  

In a month, once I buy and read more, I hope to have more favorites.
