This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: RPGPunditIt was what Woody Guthrie wrote on his guitar. In other words, freely speaking out is the machine that "kills" fascists.

My moderators have that line because it ties to the core concept of the moderation of this site: that moderators here are people entrusted to ensure the protection of free speech, rather then to become the forces that crush free speech.

RPGPundit

The funny thing about that slogan is that "communists" (far left) are just as capable of suppressing or crushing free speech as much as "fascists" (far right).  Either sides of the political spectrum can be just as totalitarian as the other.  People are often blinded by the, "my side wouldn't and couldn't" fallacy.  Interesting.

Quote from: SaphimOh, I know. The slogan was on the guitar of a guy who spoke high and mighty and when WWII hit the world he chickened out and washed dishes instead of fighting. A real giant.

I think "chickened out" is a bit harsh.  He enlisted in the Merchant Marines and was later drafted into the US Army.  I dunno but giving a rifle to a folk singer isn't necesarily a win-win situation...

Methinks you have a seriously inadequate understanding of the concepts of metaphor and non-violent protest.

Futurama has totally stained my mental image associated with 'folk singer'. :o

And yeah, the Merchant Marines weren't exactly hand-to-hand fighting in the trenches but if he was posted on a ship in the North Atlantic (I don't know details of his service record, just saying "if") he wasn't exactly out of harms way.

Take his gun away then send him into combat if you really want him to stop singing.

I swear that I'd buy a "Cylon and Garfunkel" album if it was possible.

Methinks you have a seriously inadequate understanding of the concept "war".
Look, this here ain't one, this is some ridiculously bloated discussion about different playstyles in which some "representatives" of the other side have made bad PR moves and now pundi has gone on some kind of "killing spree".
This is something you can handle without violence, you can secretly laugh at pundi, try to discuss with him and his cronies, whatever.

Now, war on the other hand, admittedly has quite a few definitions, but it basically boils down to countries engaging in violent conflict and other people dying. You can't stop a war with non-violent protest, no matter what you write onto your guitar and what kind of stuff you sing.
Admittedly not everyone is cut for war, but first making pretentious statements about what your important art does and then making your friend lobby for you to be a dishwasher instead of someone who actually does something in the war doesn't make you a giant.

1)  You're response still fails to address the point.

2)  You've already been pointed out to be largely wrong in this anyway

3)  You're an ignorant cockwrapping.

Awwww, sweet. Snark... and such a cute little one at that.
Anyway, so, where have I been wrong? There are no fascists of any kind to kill, not with words, nor with guns. The indie crowd does not plan to smolder free speech and take over the gaming world while pundi himself speaks of time travelling hitmen and a "war" against the swine, which in itself is a not so nice metaphor and certainly casts a rather strange hue on "this machine kills fascists". I suggest you try to get your arguement straight, wash your mouth and the come back.

Quote from: BalbinusI wouldn't, whatever I took out would likely be somebody's much loved game.

I tend to find that I can deal with games I don't like by not playing them.  I recommend it generally.

Balbinus speaks the ultimate truth. Any designer disappeared in any way empoverishes the hobby. If a guy makes a game I dislike, I won't play it. Also, wishing things had been any other way than the way they went is ridiculous.
