This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Time-Travelling Hitman: If You Could Go Back...

If I could travel back in time, I'd hand Gygax a modern game with streamlined, unfied mechanics and wish him luck.

How's that as a non-creepy response?

How dare you imply that Gygax did not create the perfect game. Don't you know that Gygax is untouchable...wait...not in the Hindu caste sense...hold on..you're confusing me...Gygax good...good... good... Gygax.

Age of Fable

Ironically, I was recently complaining about my local ongoing annual role-playing event.

Anyway, a guy told me he was a time-travelling hitman, and offered to go back in time and 'take them out' for me.

It turned out to be a con.

Quote from: RPGPunditLet's say you had some kind of time-travelling hitman at your service, that would go back in time and take out any single game designer just before he started his career: who would you take out?

What do you think the effect would be?

How about this guy or this guy.  Think about what sort of world we would live in now.  :)

You know, I don't want them killed, but I wouldn't mind a world where video games were less prevalent.
"Meh."

Quote from: KoltarYou don't "KILL" them - you instead make them successful at something . SO, instead of writing and creating the Vampire/World of Darkness silliness.....Rein*Hagen becomes the producer and star of children's programs.
THe kind with walking and talking big animals and lots of balloons a colorful rainbows.

The idea of Rein·Hagen living out his life as the actor from Blues Clues strikes me as endlessly amusing, and would no doubt be, for him, a fate worse than death. I love it.

If you want less stupid videogames, turn your "attention" to the guys who developed the FPS genre, and not to a creative genius like Miyamoto.

I wouldn't have anyone whacked, but I would slip a copy of True20 under Mr. Gygax and Arneson's door.

I'd also tell a young and enthusiastic artist with the surname Siembieda that he should stop fucking about with houseruled D&D and write a bespoke system for all those cool ideas he'll have. And to enrol in business school while he's at it.

I'd pat a young Rein*Hagen on the head and tell him that many, many people will end up using his horror games for Highlander-style jinks, no matter how much Anne Rice fanfic he slips between the covers.

Finally, I'd tell a little boy named Mearls that he's destined to face obscene amounts of pouting nerd-rage in thirty years time, and had best develop a thick skin fast.

I'd also save Sarah Connor and marry her, of course. :)

You might also want to hand him one of these.

Oh, from what I've seen in terms of what they do to defend him and his work, I'm pretty certain some his more strident followers do touch him. As I understand it, the process first involves kneeling and fumbling with his zipper.

Sure, you think so until the Terminator shows up and kills you, leaving Sarah to raise the love child that she had with you alone.

Its not the quality of the video game that I'd like to see improved. Its the popularity of the tabletop RPG hobby that I'd like to see increased.

You leave John Carmack out of this! The world would be a smaller, sadder place without a little FPS action.

Although I'm all for John Romero being fair game for a temporal cleaner. :p
