Title: Thundarr Sourcebook
Post by: misterguignol on March 05, 2012, 07:47:54 PM
A little while back there was a thread about cartoon that would make good RPGs.  Thundarr the Barbarian got a lot of love.  Today I stumbled across this Thundarr sourcebook (http://savageafterworld.blogspot.com/2012/03/world-of-thundarr-barbarian-sourcebook.html) for Mutant Future that I thought you all might enjoy.

But, it's all about the Sun Sword...Thundarr without his bloody Sun Sword is a wuss. I loved it as a kid for a while, but every episode was all about the Sun Sword saving the day.

Give me Conan, who can pick up a rusty dagger and hold off the Stygian army any day of the week, and can commit battlefield atrocities with the jawbone of an ass that are unfit to mention in any holy book.

Weeeeeeeeell, to be honest, I don't think Conan ever did this in the books. The few "mass" fights he had, were against still a relatively small (by DnD standards) group of opponents. And he always took them by surprise. Usually with aid, too.

Yeah, well, um, that's, er, hyperbole.

That said, he was the most feared knife fighter of the Hyborian age, and he did on a few occasions fight off a handful of foes with a dagger (and used a sword at other times...or an axe).

To make my point more clear: Conan was the hero of Conan stories, for the most part: no Conan, no story, or at least the bad guys score a steamroll victory without him.

In a similar vein, the Sun Sword is the hero of Thundarr stories. Did the cartoon ever address where he even got that thing, where it came from, who/what built it?

I doubt the ten year olds who made up the target demographic gave a shit.

I did and would if I had heard about that Thundarr. I did investigate at that age, how Boba Fett got all his armour and stuff, for example.

Although I admit I was a weird kid. For example, I always cheered for Doctor Claw and his goons rather then Inspector Gadget, who was a moron. It always struck me as sad and unrealistic that a genius was defeated by an idiot and his superknowitall niece.

Now as I am a bit older, the notion of genius being defeated by an idiot is just sad.

You can't be serious, they actually made a RPG from Thundarr? My world is ending right before my eyes. :)

First I learn they made a cartoon out of my favorite setting of all (Dragonlance) then I find out they made a RPG out of a simplistic 1980's cartoon, stick a fork in me I'm done. :)

I'm officially dead and Misterguignol is Satan. :p

I figure he took it from the tomb of some Jedi.  I mean, it's a damn lightsaber, and everybody knew it.  Just like you knew Ookla was Chewbacca in disguise.

Only if She-Ra gets the same treatment, if not there will be "repercussions".:)

I loved that horse and she at least used that sword to its full capabilities.  Maybe she was higher level?

Pfft! So both Thundarr and Conan are escaped slaves, but look at how different they turned out. Conan is scum. He is a mercenary, thief, would-be-rapist, thug who is in it just for himself.

Thundarr, using the power of his fabulous Sun Sword, is out there trying to make the world a better place and asks for nothing in return.

I mean really, who would you rather meet in a dark alley or see you sister get married to?

O

kay I kid, but you really want to compare a pulp classic aimed for adults which enjoy a quasi-literature status to a kiddie show of the 80s? What next, Scooby Doo vs The Wire?

The Shield crossovering into Scooby Doo and arresting everyone for pot dealing would be an awesome episode IMO.

But Conan doesn't fly helicopters.

For the record: Fan made, like the OTE "Under the Broken Moon" materials for Thundarr.

And no--it wasn't about the sword. Sure the sword let him do a lot, but Thundarr picked people up and threw them around. The sword let him go toe to toe with wizards.

Of course I loved one fan's view. Thundarr doesn't stop and think, my friend is in danger down there and here I am on this cliff what should I do? No, Thundarr goes "Friend in danger!" JUMP!

He's the guy who backs you up, helps you out. He may not be bright, but that's what he has Ariel for..

No, I'm pretty sure that context isn't in the show. Mostly because Ariel obviously likes him, and he doesn't seem to notice at all. It comes across is he is everyone's (good) big brother. There to get you out of jams. Help you out. He just doesn't get that Ariel doesn't want that...she wants something else.

Weird...my post got eaten?

Tarnation, an eaten post.

Anyway, here goes, in brief: what REH story has Conan seriously considering forcing himself into a woman?

I admit that if I met Conan in an alley, he'd probably rob me...but I'd still have more fun with him than with Thundarr afterwards.

As far as marrying sister, Conan, all the way. Having a brother in law as king would be good, and I'm sure to be an uncle.

On the other hand, Thundarr marrying my sister? Not much chance of becoming an uncle, I suspect.

And as a kid, *I* found every episode being about the Sun Swooooord to be pretty annoying after awhile.

Frost Giant's Daughter I think, not that I'm any kind of Conan expert. Anyway I'm trying to make any serious point here.

He was taunted and teased in a very hardcore manner, that involved trying to be slain by two frost giants.

But hey, I didn't find that nearly as odd as I thought a helicopter sitting around for 2000 years still able to fly was.

In Thundarr's case, it really is likely to be magic.

Yeah, even as I acknowledge that, sort of, he was in a way a kind of would-be rapist...it was in the case of a teasing demigod that tried to get him murdered so she could serve his steaming heart to her father, a god.

Still, I wouldn't rule out him 'raping' the female snow-nymph that teased him hardcore; all bets are off after you try to murder Conan, after all.

Quote from: Silverlion;519920Thundarr doesn't stop and think, my friend is in danger down there and here I am on this cliff what should I do? No, Thundarr goes "Friend in danger!" JUMP!

One of my favorite scenes is where Thundarr jumps up into the face of a large monster and says, "Listen, fiend..." only to have the monster swat him aside like a bug.

When my group ran a Thundarr game, I played the impatient barbarian.  He could wait, at most, for about 15 minutes and then would have to do something to solve things his way.  It was a lot of fun to play but sometimes the character was pretty annoying for the other players.

What? He waited for 15 minutes? Call that impatient? Patience of a Saint, in my book.

Thanks for the kudos. (Had to stop by and see where all the new blog hits were coming.)

I'll be running a Thundarr game at Gary Con and Gen Con this year, in fact.

Thundarr the Barbarian: Across the Dimensional Divide - Demon Dogs! A dimensional time-rip has appeared near "Indeenapliss." It must be the work of an evil wizard, but who? Join Thundarr, Ookla, and Princess Ariel as they try to save the world of 3994 AD!

It's basically the Thundarr game.  It just filed off the serial numbers, it even has the sun sword.

The systems is pretty cool, you match numbers and roll dice based on the sum.

They have an intro adventure available for free (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?affiliate_id=357321&products_id=83076), which has the basic rules in it.
