This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Blah, what dildos.

Quote from: Cranewings;414607You wouldn't want that here. In the us we put away a fucking lot of innocent people. Another reason why I like the public ass kicking - once it is over you can go back to normal life. So many innocents go to death row, they need a chance for it to be overturned.

An article which asserts it's more expensive to execute someone on death row, than it is to lock them up for life.

Quote from: ggroy;414609Anecdotally, I've noticed some types of book are more often stolen by thieves.  For some reason, thieves were interested in guitar tablature books (of popular metal or grunge cds) and/or books about vampires.  No idea why.

Tablature books probably used to have pretty good resale/pawn shop value compared to most any other book; I used to see them a lot at pawn shops along with the guitars.

Books with vampires often prominently depict cleavage on the jacket art, so that probably explains that one.

Werekoala, it pains me to hear about that...
Did you have a look around the area... like in back alley dumpsters and such? A lot of times those tweekers will smash and grab and not even look in the bag until they're a block or so away... if they don't like what they see (meaning it doesn't look like they'd be able to hawk it right away for cash) they'll ditch it right there. I used to work in a strip mall and was always finding stolen purses and random merchandise in the dumpster out back.

I don't know, I think it is money well spent. If they are found innocent, they get out and the money was totally worth it. If not, I'd rather they be dead.

Death by being burned at the stake alive.

Goddamn fucking knobloids. Losing cash or something expensive and generic is bad enough, but having books stolen that you've spent time  selecting and collecting is awful.

I assume you've notified the cops, which isn't always pointless.  The thieves may get nabbed for something else and the books could turn up in their posession.

And don't be too quick to assume they've been binned or burnt.  Thieves can be very entrepreneurial.  Keep an eye on Ebay and local pawnshops/used book shops to see if the collection turns up.

Rough luck, man.

Getting 10 bucks or less for a few stolen rpg books, probably isn't worth their time.

It may be a different story if they're better organized, where the money isn't to get a drug fix.

Probably. I mentioned it because during my bookshop days I once filled an insurance order for a guy whose entire library was stolen by burglars.  Obviously they thought they could offload the loot, and this was before the internet was everywhere.

Hairfoot, thanks for the words of encouragement. I know we've butted heads before, but the solidarity of gamers makes me feel warm and fuzzy. :)

I intend to head for the local dumpsters and such first thing in the morning, just in case.

Oh, we have huge differences of opinion on some topics, but ultimately we're only arguing about the best way to maximise the availability of Good Things on planet earth.  Please don't ever think that I wish you any personal harm.

Only gamers can appreciate the true worth of what's been stolen, and if I could I'd hand out some very un-liberal, extra-judicial punishment to those responsible!  Due process be damned.

L.A.M.E  :(   ...thieves be damned.

check some of the local used book stores etc. as well as dumpsters in the area. In this age of economic challenge anything worth money will be sold. There has been a glut of used stuff at my LFGS as of late (I got a 1ed. C&S very good cond. for $15 !) so don't dispare yet, though you may have to buy back the items...

good luck. :)
Form the group wisely, make sure you share goals and means.
Set norms of table etiquette early on.
Encourage attentive participation and speed of play so the game will stay vibrant!
Allow that the group, milieu and system will from an organic symbiosis.
Most importantly, have fun exploring the possibilities!

Sorry Werekoala, that's amazingly crappy. Going to New Orleans this weekend. I'll pick up a couple of voodoo dolls for you and and work a curse on the rat bastards.
