This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

There's something about Exalted...

Well, Victorians just can't hold a candle to immortal god-monarchs, obviously!
Quote from: Iron_Rain;855513I think the setting fluff and art is one factor. Another can be the virtue mechanic itself. I remember by my 3rd session of Exalted a male and female player whom, out of game were not romantic involved, decided their characters get married and try to take over the world.

So, later on they get surprise attacked by an Abyssal trying to assassinate them while they were asleep in their bedroom. There was a horde of zombies snuck into their castle and attackin the other PCs, things being lit on fire, alarm bellz ringing etc.

The male pc one shots the Abyssal butt nekid. The female player makes and oo-la-la comment. In a moment of GM inspiration, I say to her "roll your temperance" which was 4 BTW. She triple botches. Hmm. I declare that saving her life and demonstrating his prowess at violence excited her uncontrollably  and she jumps him. We all have a big laugh.

Thinking to give them an out, I say the male pc can decide what to do... No. The player  declares he wants to roll his temperance too. After all, he says he female pc has Appearance 5. I say OK, sure. The male PC also has temperance 4. He double botched.
Yeah, the Virtues mechanic has always been great fun. It's lead to some of our most memorable roleplaying moments, too.
The odds of this happening  are fairly low... and the whole table just exploded into gales of laughter. They ended up humping the whole time while the other 3 PCs  fight off the abyssals and zombies.

Was very memorable. Led to other PCs  solving RP problems with sex. I never intended it to go that way but it kind of did.

Quote from: Orphan81;855517I just know my Exalted games had way more sex than any of my other games, including my Victorian Age Vampire game.

If I had the means and drive to do at least a semi rigorous poll of Exalted players this is definitely one of the subjects I'd try to get some real data on.

Yup, which is impressive considering my Victorian Age player character group consisted of a Toreador Prostitute, A Malkavian Sex Cult Head, and a Setite purveyor of Vice.

But in my Exalted Games, Realm Dragonblooded were always fuckin', slavery was a thing, and every sword and sorcery town had multiple houses of ill repute.

Does Victorian vampire keep the idea that vampires don't actually experience any physical pleasure from sex*?

*AKA: The most houseruled canon in the WoD. :D

Yeah, they kept it. It's just an expansion to regular Masquerade so they don't really get into that too much. But the corebook and the companion really go into how the Victorian age was REALLY filled with repressed sexuality and how the penny dreadfuls of the era were all full of titillation.

Hence they recommend playing it up, and my players were more than up to the task.

Works for me. I never had the chance to get into Victoria Age but I always di think it was make a great era for vampire. Such great atmosphere.

I think the NC-17 Exalted discussions have died down simply because the game is 14 years old by now, and most people have gotten the titilating discussions they wanted to have out of their system.

No doubt that is part of it but there has been, IMO, a shift in attitude about the game and its fanbase. Its become (like almost everything else) more political and culture war oriented and concerned with presenting the proper image for side the creator's endorse. Things that would have barely caused a blink before have caused OUTRAGE now (like some of the Abyssal charms previewed). IMO, of course. And I'm still curious if its really gone down or folks are just talking about it less.

Maybe, but I for one, do not believe it for a second.

This site (not everyone of course, but as an overall tone) seems to believe that the culture wars are some how raging rampantly, and extra specifically right now, and that roleplaying is somehow magically right there in the thick of it.

Where is this OUTRAGE? Who is doing it? And how are they doing it such that they are keeping everyone else from expressing their true gaming preferences? Specific details greatly appreciated.

It's not that I suspect that I'd be on the other side of the culture wars as the rest of this site... I am just unconvinced of the threat.

Well, one of us is correct, and I am also curious what the reality is.

About Exalted? Well,  you can go to rpg.net and search for the threads on the 3rd Edition Abyssals charms that were previewed or on the art in 1st and 2ed or some of the other sex based charms. The "discussions" of things like The House of Succulent Tears and opening chapters of MOEP: The Infernals and compare them to threads about the game from earlier.

As for gaming culture in general, that's another topic that outside the scope of this thread but you could look into the threads on the ToR kerfluffle or the "Worst Sexism, Racism" thread over on TBP for some examples.

Edit: Or any threads on games that were blasted essentially for being "politically incorrect (The Strange, Numera and Cthullutech immediately come to mind).

The subject could be worth its own thread come to think of it.

I don't really know from Exalted or WW in general, but aside from the reasons put forth above, is it possible that there's a critical mass of interest in those themes because of the fanbase brought over from WoD?

To summarize, three non-exclusive hypotheses:

Setting drawn from S&S, classical myth, 1k1 Nights, etc; not European medieval fantasy.

Mechanics include some kind of virtue/temperance test.

Fanbase naturally includes a high proportion of WoD fans because of marketing, brand loyalty, and familiarity with the system concepts, and WoD fans are already disposed to play up romance/relationships/sexuality.

If my experience with the game is anything to go by, it's only the discussions that have gone down, the actual game content is actually more NC-17 than before:).

Well, I've never been too willing to discuss this part of the sessions on Internet. But we can all name people who had unfortunate accidents as a result of talking about their personal lives, can't we?
So my alternative explanation is that people have just realised that what they say on Internet isn't gone the moment they close the browser.

Again, sounds neat, but my experience doesn't confirm it. The players in my group that are the most disposed to play up romance and relationships simply aren't WoD fans, and have never been such;).

Quote from: Snowman0147;853351I heard other stories as well.  A male solar had sex with a fae in order to free some slaves.  So the fae refuse after sex which is not expected since the fae in the setting suck out human souls.  So the solar used a custom charm that sounds like cum, or piss.  Though given at the time I go with the former.  Point is the charm was so potent that it instantly killed the fae.

The last two or three pages in the Rpgnet Exalted leak discussion show a decided shift in some of the fanbase attitude towards sexual material.
