This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Damn, isn't there? I've been playing it wrong.

I love these old reviews; they give a lot of insight about the age they were written in.
QuoteIn many ways T&T is a simpler
game. It is certainly not as statistically
rigorous in its treatment of characters
and situations as D&D.
Back then™, D&D was considered statistically rigorous! :D

Pretty sure "Yassa Massa" is not a good name for a command spell, though.

I wouldn't want to argue the modifier for female PCs with anyone. It's long gone in all games isn't it?

It's gone in all mainstream games that I'm aware of it. I'm sure if the concept was present in anything with significant sales, it would be dogpiled.

There are however games that fly under the radar.

I think HarnMaster still has stat modifiers based on sex, which I think are more palatable because they come from height and frame stats.  Human women get a bonus to their Aura stat that determines magical power.  Elves, dwarves, and orcs have different sexual dimorphism.

That's the only mainstream game I can think of with stat modifiers.

Burning Wheel has a few female-only and possibly male-only Lifepath options.

Great, now that you've said this, some wing bat is about to climb onto their soapbox and present games no one has ever heard of as examples of sexism in gaming and why all geeks are pigs.

I hope you are happy.

The other day I was reading a review of Conan The Barbarian in an issue of Dragon magazine, and it was quite interesting.  The reviewer lambasted the movie as horrible and not worth your time.

I guess he didn't know it would go on to be a loved and iconic fantasy movie of all time.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

I remember in the mid 80s Kim Mohan (editor for Dragon magazine) was replying to accusations of how those tables are sexist, and how dragon cover art is sexist*.  His responses were pretty damn sexist in themselves*, and if he made the same comments today, there would be a movement that would make the "JD must be banned" movement pale by comparison.

*Essentially his position was that nekkid women art is "fine art" and acceptable, but nekkid men art is horrible because there's no way a fighter would go into battle without armor.  o_O

What's confusing me about this is that D&D in 1975 (which is to say the original boxed set and possibly Supplement I) didn't have the arbitrary gender-based stat reductions that this reviewer is so peeved about. The AD&D PH capped strength for females and demi-humans, but that wasn't released until 1978.

It's also a little funny to see D&D described as "very professionally done" and costing "a small fortune" :)

Well... Speaking of stats for female characters in obscure RPGs, this is what the PCs in the presently Kickstarted Busty Barbarian Bimbos have.

I'd like to assume that this is a troll the mob style game, but I really really doubt it.

I'll give you the first one, given the production values we have today, but it did cost alot back then. If you adjust for inflation, AD&D 1e was pretty pricey. The PHB cost $12. In 2013 dollars, that's about $42 for a 112 page B&W book.
