This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Who confirmed it? Is there a link?
"Illegitimis non carborundum." - General Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

A 4.5E was planned all along from the beginning?

Get rid of all the old inventory, before it all becomes completely unsellable.

It was in a gencon email sent around.  I haven't seen the original, but it has been posted on enworld.

Might a direct response to Pathfinder being $10.

"Why buy a PDF for $10 when you can get a print book for $5?"

ggroy

I wonder if something similar was done a year or so before the announcement of 3.5E.  The earliest announcement of 3.5E which I can find, is an article from January 2003.

Well, it's definitely a good promotion.  I'm not sure it's indicative of anything, in and of itself.

They fear Pathfinder and the inroads it might make, so they are making one last ditch effort to get every last gamer in their tent, and try to steal Paizo's thunder.

This GenCon is going to belong to Paizo.  What's WOTC have to jazz people up?  Nada.

That's my thought as well.

Though it doesn't necessarily mean that 4e is doing badly or anything. We don't have any evidence of that. But I think WotC is simply trying to "exist", to come up with "something" at GenCon when Paizo's going to own the show.

Well, I do agree with you, that I'm expecting an explosion of Pathfinder Gen Con goodness.  There's a few products every year that seem to steal the show, and judging from the buzz I'm getting, nothing's going to touch Pathfinder.  We'll see if the reality matches that prediction, but that's the feeling I'm getting.

The difference is that the $10 price tag on the PDF isn't going to last for just a few days...

Benoist

Oh, and the PHB is not "just" $5. From the email sent by WotC:

"Wizards of the Coast will be selling the 4th Edition Player’s Handbook for $5 with the purchase of any other D&D rulebook."

Emphasis mine.

Who knows?

I wonder if they're going to be announcing next year's setting at gencon this week.  I think it will drop like a stone and be a bust, if next year's setting is something like Dragonlance, Greyhawk, Mystara, etc ...

With the announcement of two upcoming 4E planar books (ie. Plane Below + Plane Above), I wonder if next year's setting is something like Planescape or Spelljammer or even some merger of the two.

you know, someone HAS been buying up all the "semi-new" #4e books from ebay lately for cheap.  mystery solved?  they may even make a profit off the $5 books.  :)

Heh.  Sounds similar to computer/hi-tech companies buying back their own equipment for pennies on the dollar, shortly after dotcom bust back in 2000-2001.
