This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Hmm....

  • Five years ago:  D&D 3.0
  • Ten years ago:  D&D 3.0
  • Fifteen years ago:  Nothing
  • Twenty years ago:  MERP
  • Twenty Five years ago:  Nothing
  • Thirty years ago:  AD&D 1e

The list is deceptive, since at the 30 year mark I was a few months away from having my D&D collection thrown out because it was all Satanic.  The 25 year mark is also a half year away from picking up AD&D again while I was at college.

The Were-Grognard

5 Years ago -  Got on the 4e bandwagon.  Liked it at first, but it ultimately did not deliver D&D experiences similar to those of the past 15 years.  Worked my way "back" from C&C, to AD&D 2e/1e, and now B/X.

10 Years ago - D&D 3.x, d20 fevah in full swing; had a few brief, but fun D6-based horror and sci-fi campaigns when running 3.x became a chore.  The simplicity was liberating, but I hadn't learned my lesson yet...

15 Years ago - AD&D 2e; played in WoD and GURPS campaigns; some Star Wars and other RPGs on the side

20 Years ago - AD&D 2e, RC BECMI, and other popular RPGs of the time (White Wolf, GURPS, Palladium, Star Wars, etc.)

25 Years ago - Hadn't discovered RPGs yet, but played "make believe" like a mofo :D  The stage was already set.

10 years ago march: I think we'd have been wrapping up my Roman game in Canada, using D20

Blackmoor grew from a single Castle to include, first, several adjacent Castles (with the forces of Evil lying just off the edge of the world to an entire Northern Province of the Castle and Crusade Society's Great Kingdom.

Skipping games I ran/played only once or twice...

Recently: OD&D
5 Years Ago: AD&D
10 Years Ago: AD&D and ORC system (Fates Worse Than Death, In Dark Alleys, Tibet)
15 Years Ago: AD&D
20 Years Ago: GURPS
25 Years Ago: AD&D/GURPS/BRP (CoC, Stormbringer)
30 Years Ago: (A)D&D, TFT
35 Years Ago: (O)D&D

I started with mimeographed tables from OD&D. The first D&D book I actually saw was Holmes in one of the early printings (my box contained geomorphs and the monster & treasure assortment.) When we had all the AD&D books, we also had OD&D whitebox, and there was enough borrowing from both that it would be hard to peg which we were technically playing.

The AD&D games we played 10 years ago were supposed to be mixed 1e/2e, but I was playing, not GMing, and I'm not sure what the 2e elements were. The GM at the time wanted to try 3e as it was coming out, but didn't want to run it, so I was supposed to... bought the books, but between scheduling problems, the long time it took to get all the books, and the sheer unappealing nature of the 3e rules kind of prevented that, so it looks like I never really broke out of the OD&D/Holmes/AD&D 1e area... which I'm fine with, now.

5 Years ago is when I started playing my house system, Phaserip, pretty much exclusively.

10 Years ago I wasn't gaming,  still traveling across Europe. I still read games as they came out that peaked my interest, but there was a good 3 year break of almost no gaming.

15 Years ago I was running Changeling The Dreaming, BESM 2E, and FASERIP a lot. Also during this time played quite a bit of Planescape (AD&D 2nd), Castle Falkenstein, H.O.L., and  Shadowrun 2E.

20 Years ago I I was a young 'un playing Warhammer Fantasy, FASERIP, WEG's Star Wars, and Dragon Warriors.

There's been a lot of games in-between those, honourable mentions going to:

Prince Valiant
Tribe 8
Teenagers From Outer Space
Paranoia
The Marvel Universe RPG
GURPs 3E
Ghostbusters
Chill
Kult
Unknown Armies
Over The Edge

and, of course, Lone Wolf.

APN

Now - Mini6, T&T, DC Heroes, BASH!, just finished a 3 year campaign of heavily houseruled Golden Heroes, all by forum
5 years ago - Golden Heroes by forum, Marvel Universe RPG by forum
10 years ago - Golden Heroes by forum, Hero system (5e if I recall correctly) by forum. GH was far more successful by forum than I managed to sell to my group to play.
15 years ago - getting drunk, chasing women, getting punched
20 years ago - See 15 years, plus BECMI high level, DC Heroes occasionally
25 years ago - everything. Seriously whatever was out at the time, we bought and tried it. A lot of AD&D, BECMI, bit of RQ, lot of MERP, some RM, Warhammer, Marvel, DC, V&V, Traveller, Toon, Lots and lots of WEG D6 star wars, Star Frontiers, Starships and Spacemen... all sorts. Most didn't stick around for long. RQ was too weird 'wait, ducks???' and T&T wasn't serious enough about how you killed stuff and took their stuff. We rotated games and kept an ongoing BECMI campaign going throughout. Played a few homebrew games as well, and not just as one shots. They were reasonably successful, for months at a time.
30 years ago - Running homebrew Fantasy/D&D type games. I think it was pre BECMI days and I was steadily recruiting a group that would stay together for 5-10 years
1981 ish - Moldvay Basic. Sold the book to some friends after I ran a game and they wanted to play, thinking I'd get another. Couldn't find one, wrote my own games. I suppose I got half a dozen people into the hobby with a 'clone' called Dragonsword that ran for months till the B in BECMI came out. Others followed - a game about Knights in armour, later a Thundercats ripoff, a star wars type game (using D&D style rules) and more. I thought I'd kept them but I guess they don't survive 30 years of house moving :( Would've been nice to see how crap it (Dragonsword) was and wonder how anyone would play it. I miss my group. They put up with a lot of my rubbish back then.
