This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

QuoteThe amount is discussed has become less and less. The best thing we all can do (yes, me included) is simply not reply to the threads. When we take away the attention he craves he will move on to something else.

Well, when you start a thread ranting, and people pay attention to you, you should be happy. All to many of my such threads drift to the bottom of the page.

What kills me (as in "this is what's wrong with gaming discussion on the intarweb these days") is that I've seen threads posted over there where people are all hyped about SWSE and discuss how great it would be if there were talent tree style classes for D&D. EditorBFG points out that he has a product that does this, and he pretty much gets roundly ignored. But a few mentions of games he likes and he gets nailed to a rhetorical cross.

Quote from: Blue DevilSee I am not a fan of Free-Form role playing, I like dice roles and rules that really frame what goes on.

So Dread wouldn't do it for me.

Just curious, what didn't you like about it?

Well, I bought the game based on the hype, and it sounded like a nifty mechanic...but it fell kinda flat.

I've only played it once (and I ran it) and would like to try again.  It's an interesting idea, and the jenga tower is a great way to build tension, theoretically.

However, the game felt very odd to run.  Pacing is really important, and there is some advice in the book, but you have to completely re-work he way you run games.  It requires a pull every few minutes to work correctly, and calling on people to risk their character's life for trivial things seems...wrong.

Again, I don´t know the guy, and he might be the coolest dude ever.
But that post, that tone, that kind of references:

That´s a textbook example of the Venom of the Forge.

For the rest of it, I cannot sympathize with your longing for harmony, especially as I did not jump into any other thread.
You "jumped" into a swine-witch-bash-hunt thread, so you shouldn´t be surprised.

I don´t see, where I´m taking away internet enjoyment from you.

Quote from: from ENWorldWell, you really can't fault somebody for coming up with a clever RPG that requires creativity and imagination, can you?

I've been on a "story games" kick lately-- Agon, Carry, Mortal Coil, and the ultrapopular Dogs in the Vineyard have been run at my wonderful FLGS-- and Dread is now on my list of things to try. The guys that work on this stuff are the ones who are really evolving the hobby.

It has really made me wonder how-- or if-- it is possible to apply some of these principles to something like d20. So I'm digging this discussion.

I know, just quoting that makes me squirm at the forge venom.

I mean, how dare he wonder if there's a way to integrate an interesting game mechanic that builds tension into d20!  And expressing admiration for Forge games that he's enjoyed and saying they're advancing the hobby in some way?!  For shame!

:D

Yeah, I'm no fast friend of the forge, but hey, if something works or adds something interesting to my game, I'll use it.

The difference between me and someone I would label a forge-swine is I don't lend any merit to an idea just because it came from the forge. But I think it's neurotic to tar and feather a good idea just because it came from the forge or someone tightly or loosely associated with the forge.

No he implied they were the only ones:  "The guys that work on this stuff are the ones who are really evolving the hobby."

THe rest of us are apparently jsut wasting our time, it's the Forge who're the revolutionaries, blah blah.

It's pretty stock rhetoric really, I've heard it before, and yes, it's an ass thing to say.  The condescension and superiority in that line is pretty fucking blatant.

Sett's a douchebag, but that doesn't make this guy any less of a douchebag.

Yes, it´s disgusting, isn´t it?
Especially as it was uncalled for.

Good thing nobody reacted to it.

Only sensible, as the conversation was about something totally different.

But post #39 is the prototypical forger-viral swinery.

It´s a neat little idea, I think.
I already decided I will swipe it for the ultimate battle over reality and the multiverse, should anybody ever reach Immortality in one of my games.

The Forge game Dread, which takes stupid gimmicky mechanics to a new level, by making its central mechanic based around Jenga.

My thought, too.

The resolution mechanic is simple, yet sloppy. Essentially, early actions for everyone are easier, later actions are harder -- until somebody dies. Then actions get easier again when the tower is rebuilt, etc.

It's not a 'Forge' game, as the development largely took place outside of that community as far back as 2002. The association with the Forge, I think, came about as a result of the game's creators choosing to distribute through IPR late last year (note that at the time I reviewed the game, they hadn't yet made that decsision).

As for the gimmick mechanic yes, it is at that -- on the other, unlike most gimmick mechanics, it also works. Most notably, the cyclical tension set up by the Jenga tower mirrors that of the source material that the game seeks to emulate (horror movie plot structure, basically). The downside is that you have to be familiar with the genre to run it right.

If you see Horror as nothing more that body count and shock factor, Dread will not work for you.

I'll say... any RPG that doesn't use DICE for resolution is a gimmicky piece of shit.
